Tony Rezko, the Prophet Barack’s friend, fund-raiser, and real-estate shopping buddy, was convicted today on 16 of 24 counts against him, including fraud, money laundering and joining a bribery conspiracy. Hey, it’s Chicago! Who knows what Tony did after lunch?
Obama, of course, has claimed he hardly knew Rezko, that they weren’t close. To the contrary, this summary from the Chicago Tribune of Obama and Rezko’s 17-year relationship shows they worked quite closely together, and that Rezko was a key fundraiser. Oh, and then there’s that house deal and the connection to Nadhmi Auchi, an Anglo-Iraqi billionaire who was convicted of corruption in France and loaned Rezko millions — quite likely including the money to buy the Obama’s dream home.
Rezko is facing the prospect of decades in prison, and the temptation has to be great to offer up dirt on others to get a reduced sentence. It’s almost given that he’ll squeal on Illinois Governor Blagojevich, but is it also nervous-time in Obama HQ?
And even if there’s no fire to go with the smoke, I’m with Fausta: Can we question Obama’s judgment now? ![]()
