Psycho #2 dead? The audacity of hope!

August 2, 2008

Reports have been flooding the news and blogosphere that we may have wounded or even killed al-Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri in a recent airstrike in Pakistan. From their lips, and all that.

Trouble is, there have been plenty of rumors in the past that Zawahiri is dead, each of them in turn proving to be false. I’m with Bill Roggio: the source for this current story is Pakistani intelligence, which makes it very suspect. This is the same intel service that has close, supportive ties with the Taliban and, by extension, al-Qaeda. Playing a double game is their regular mode of operation. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this were a ploy to throw us off the trail of someone they’re trying to protect.

Color me extremely doubtful until it’s confirmed by the US, but it would be wonderful* if true.

*(Yes, I would take that bastard’s death as an occasion for glee. So should any decent person.)

In memoriam?
