First he’s our first Gay President, now he’s our first Jewish president?

May 31, 2012

I mean, that’s kind of the idea when he told Conservative Jewish rabbis that he knows more about Judaism than any past president:

In the meeting, Obama reportedly boasted about his knowledge of Judaism, telling the leaders that he thinks he knows more “about Judaism” than all past presidents. He said he gained this knowledge of Judaism from reading.

Obama … stressed he probably knows about Judaism more than any other president, because he read about it,” Haaretz reports. “[He] wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel [sic] about their support to Israel.”

Similarly, he said to the group, “I [am] not going to tell you again how I even feel about Israel, but why [are] we still talking about it?”

He then suggested that he should not be questioned about his commitment to the Jewish state because “all his friends in Chicago were Jewish – and at the beginning of his political career he was accused of  being a puppet of the Israel lobby,” Haaretz reports.

Get it? He read about Judaism (Once? Twice? How deeply? The menu at the local deli?), and, hey, some of his best friends were Jews, so of course he’s an expert on a nearly 6,000-year old religion.

What’s next, a production of “Guess who’s coming to (Passover) dinner?”

Bill Kristol responds:

And the claim that Obama knows more about Judaism than any president? His vanity boggles the mind. One could begin by citing Adams and Madison, who knew Hebrew, or Harry Truman, who knew Jewish history … but it’s silly to dignify this claim with a rebuttal. In thinking about the presidents since Truman, though, I’d guess the president who knew the most about Judaism was Jimmy Carter, who taught Sunday school and had a deep interest in religion. So let’s stipulate that of the modern presidents, Carter and Obama “know” the most about Judaism. But what is it they know? In Obama’s case, one could ask whether what he “knows” is what he learned from Rashid Khalidi (1) and Jeremiah Wright.

I know we’ve seen examples of his overwhelming ego again and again over the last 3-4 years, but each new one still leaves me saying “You’ve got to be kidding.”

Trouble is, he isn’t.

RELATED: Jeff Dunetz isn’t impressed at all.

Footnote:
(1) That would be former PLO spokesman and Hamas sympathizer Rashid Khalidi, whom Obama toasted at a farewell dinner, the tape of which has been mysteriously suppressed by the LA Times. Never knew he was Jewish…

Why former Rep. Artur Davis is switching from Democrat to Republican

May 31, 2012

**Posted by Sister Toldjah

The Hill reports (hat tip):

Former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama is officially leaving the party for the GOP, he announced Tuesday.

“Wearing a Democratic label no longer matches what I know about my country and its possibilities,” Davis wrote on his website after lamenting that “this is not Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party.”

The former congressman will also switch his party registration to in Virginia, where he now lives.

Davis has been rumored as a possible GOP congressional candidate in Northern Virginia, and in the statement he doesn’t rule out the possibility, although his long statement indicates if he runs it could be for either the House or the statehouse and would be in 2014 or afterwards.

The one-time Democratic rising star had grown critical of the party in recent years, was the only African American member of the House to vote against Democrats’ health care reform law, and became increasingly vocal about his disagreements with the Democrats after losing a gubernatorial primary in 2010.

Davis, who has been an occasional guest contributor at National Review Online, has a fairly comprehensive website where you can go to learn more about who he is, his views on the issues, etc. Here’s his full post explaining his party switch.

Even though I wasn’t crazy about “Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party” back in the day, I have to say it would be much more preferable to the far left mentality we see in most elected Democrats today – especially in the case of our radicalized celebrity President and certain members of Congress. It goes without saying that Obama Democrats are bad news for America. It took a lot of guts for Davis to switch parties in this highly charged climate and then openly announce such – even though he is not in Congress anymore – because he is black and few “minority” groups ever feel the wrath of “tolerant” leftists like black people and gay people who either have never toed the Democrat party line or who wake up from doing so at some point in their lives. And right now when all black Democrats are supposed to fall in line behind Barack Obama come election time, Davis making his views public should be considered all the more bold.

I commend him for the stance he’s taken, and am looking forward to reading about him and learning more from him regarding his policy ideas in the future. Welcome to the party, Mr. Davis.

More European Union signs of Doom

May 30, 2012

We all know that Greece is a mess… No, wait. Scratch that. We all know that Greece is a hot, steaming, radioactive mess that threatens to mutate into a blob that eats the EU alive.

Everyone knows that.

But it’s even worse than you think when the tax system literally is run by the Mob:

“The basic question is that a German has to increase working from 65 to 67 and that is to pay for Greeks retiring at 50. The 17th of June is the perfect opportunity to say either ‘we’ll behave’ or ‘we’ll carry on cheating,’” he said.

Harsh words, but they are confirmed by many Greeks I know. A Greek member of parliament told me recently that tax reform was “almost impossible” to achieve because “our tax system is run by the Mafia.” I laughed and said that many countries had people who thought of their tax collectors that way. “No, no,” the parliamentarian insisted. “I mean that organized crime really runs the tax agencies for their benefit, taking a cut of the reduction in taxes they give out to citizens. Every person appointed to reform the system has been pushed out. Respect for authority is nil.”

Unless Greeks suddenly show a level of maturity and moral courage they haven’t shown since, well, Salamis, I don’t see how they avoid collapse, which could well take the Euro and the EU itself with them.

PS: Want something even scarier? While it may not sport a Mafia-run tax system, Spain looks like a far worse horror show ready to get underway.

#PPact issues ridiculous statement in response sex selective abortion exposé video

May 29, 2012

**** Written by Sister Toldjah ****

First, in case you haven’t heard:

Live Action says Planned Parenthood and other U.S. abortion providers are willing to assist in the termination of baby girls for pregnant women who choose abortion because they want to have baby boys. And the pro-life abortion watchdog says its video series and a new website will expose it all.

“This was a multi-state, national investigation demonstrating that this is a widespread problem across our country,” Live Action president Lila Rose told The Daily Caller in an interview Monday.

“First of all, the statistics and studies indicate that we are adding to the growing problem across the world of sex-selective targeting of unborn girls for abortion. We are going to be demonstrating — starting with this video from Texas — that the abortion industry in the United States is aiding and abetting this horrific problem.”

The first in what Live Action says is a series of videotaped incidents exposing American abortion facilities’  willingness to assist in sex-selection abortions took place at a South Austin, Texas Planned Parenthood clinic. In the footage, a Planned Parenthood counselor appears to readily assist and advise a Live Action actor who said she was trying to obtain an abortion if her baby is female.

Here’s the video:

In case you don’t have time to watch the full video, here’s the YouTube description (bolded emphasis added by me):

AUSTIN, May 29 — Today, Live Action released a new undercover video showing a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Austin, TX encouraging a woman to obtain a late-term abortion because she was purportedly carrying a girl and wanted to have a boy. The video is first in a new series titled “Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America,” exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.

“I see that you’re saying that you want to terminate if it’s a girl, so are you just wanting to continue the pregnancy in the meantime?” a counselor named “Rebecca” offers the woman, who is purportedly still in her first trimester and cannot be certain about the gender. “The abortion covers you up until 23 weeks,” explains Rebecca, “and usually at 5 months is usually (sic) when they detect, you know, whether or not it’s a boy or a girl.” Doctors agree that the later in term a doctor performs an abortion, the greater the risk of complications.

The Planned Parenthood staffer suggests that the woman get on Medicaid in order to pay for an ultrasound to determine the gender of her baby, even though she plans to use the knowledge for an elective abortion. She also tells the woman to “just continue and try again” for the desired gender after aborting a girl, and adds, “Good luck, and I hope that you do get your boy.”

Life News’ Steven Ertelt has excerpts of the two Planned Parenthood statements released today. The second one will result in a commencing of eyerolls, my dear readers:

“Six weeks ago a former staff member serving in an entry-level position did not follow our protocol for providing information and guidance when presented with a highly unusual patient scenario. Planned Parenthood insists on the highest quality patient care, and if we ever become aware of a staff member not meeting these high standards, we take swift action. Within three days of this patient interaction, the staff member’s employment was ended and all staff members at this affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters. Today opponents of Planned Parenthood are promoting an edited video of that hoax patient encounter.”

“Recently, opponents of Planned Parenthood conducted hoax patient visits with hidden video cameras and are now using edited videotapes to promote false claims about our organization and patient services. In highly unusual and scripted scenarios, hoax patients sought services related to sex selection.”

[...]

Planned Parenthood condemns gender bias but refuses to condemn sex-selection abortions or say their centers will deny them.

“Gender bias is contrary to everything our organization works for daily in communities across the country. Planned Parenthood opposes racism and sexism in all forms, and we work to advance equity and human rights in the delivery of health care. Planned Parenthood condemns sex selection motivated by gender bias, and urges leaders to challenge the underlying conditions that lead to these beliefs and practices, including addressing the social, legal, economic, and political conditions that promote gender bias and lead some to value one gender over the other.”

[...]

“The world’s leading women’s health and rights organizations, including the World Health Organization, do not believe that curtailing access to abortion services is a legitimate means of addressing sex selection, and have made clear that gender bias can only be resolved by addressing the underlying conditions that lead to it. And we agree. We support efforts that ensure girls and women have access to economic opportunity, including fair wages, basic health care, political participation, education, and a life free of violence and discrimination. Planned Parenthood works to ensure women and their families have access to high-quality nonjudgmental health services free of coercion, supported by information and counseling.”

In other words, sex-selection abortions are fine as long as other efforts are undertaken to try to stamp out gender bias.

Yep. Isn’t it disgusting the way so-called “pro-women” forces on the left engage in dangerous, warped pretzel logic in order to “condemn” sex-selective abortions on the basis that they “discriminate against women” yet in the same breath they’ll tell you a woman shouldn’t be prevented from having elective abortions for any reason whatsoever?

I have written many times on the deeply disturbing practice of sex-selective abortions and the “feminist” movement’s disgusting hypocrisy/immorality on the matter. My comments in this June 11 post are fitting in response to today’s Live Action reveal:

As I’ve asked before, what’s the big deal to pro-aborts when it comes to aborting a baby on the basis of its sex? If it shouldn’t be an issue to abort an unborn child because it will “interfere” with your social life or college education, why should we be concerned about the boy baby bias in countries like China and India? Sure, it equates to blatant discrimination against women, but what’s the more important “right”? The right to not be discriminated against on the basis of your sex, or the “right” to choose whether or not you want to terminate your unborn child?

The pro-abortion group Center for Reproductive Rights came out years ago in support of China’s ban on sex-selective abortions, on the basis of being against discrimination of women. I guess their rationale is the more women we have in the world, the more opportunities we have for indoctrinating them to support … a woman’s right to choose, for whatever reason she sees fit. While the writer of the above piece does not support anti-sex-selective abortion legislation, the “we need more women in the world” mindset is one she appears to take. In a nutshell, she supports changing the pro-boy “cultures” in China and India so as to get them to “respect” women more so they won’t interfere in any “private” decision relating to having an abortion – even if it means having an abortion for whatever reason she wants to give, including on the basis of the baby’s sex.

I swear, you simply cannot make this stuff up.

Oh, and yes – sex-selective abortions do happen here in the US. Read more on that here.

But, shhhh! Don’t tell the likes of the feministas at “progressive feminist” blogs like Jezebel, etc. We wouldn’t want them to get hurt straddling that “pro-choice/pro-woman/anti-sex-selective abortion” fence or anything.

In an honest world, this would mean war

May 29, 2012

Iran plotting to kill US diplomats? Yeah, I’d call that a casus belli…

In November, the tide of daily cable traffic to the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan brought a chilling message for Ambassador Matthew Bryza, then the top U.S. diplomat to the small Central Asian country. A plot to kill Americans had been uncovered, the message read, and embassy officials were on the target list.

The details, scant at first, became clearer as intelligence agencies from both countries stepped up their probe. The plot had two strands, U.S. officials learned, one involving snipers with silencer-equipped rifles and the other a car bomb, apparently intended to kill embassy employees or members of their families.

Both strands could be traced back to the same place, the officials were told: Azerbaijan’s southern neighbor, Iran.

The threat, many details of which were never made public, appeared to recede after Azerbaijani authorities rounded up nearly two dozen people in waves of arrests early this year. Precisely who ordered the hits, and why, was never conclusively determined. But U.S. and Middle Eastern officials now see the attempts as part of a broader campaign by Iran-linked operatives to kill foreign diplomats in at least seven countries over a span of 13 months. The targets have included two Saudi officials, a half-dozen Israelis and — in the Azerbaijan case — several Americans, the officials say.

But, let’s be honest. Iran has been at war with the US since 1979, but we’ve refused to see it, or, if we did, to ignore it and try instead to reach chimerical “grand bargain.” Iran was responsible for the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. They were behind the Khobar Towers attack in 1996. They’ve trained and supplied Iraqi insurgents against US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, resulting in American deaths. They are the most active state sponsor of terrorism in the world.

And now they’ve been caught plotting to kill our diplomats and their families.

I don’t expect it under this administration, and both Republican and Democratic presidents have refused to see the problem, but, eventually, we have to face the truth and treat Iran as an enemy who has declared jihad on us.

But, until then, how many more Americans have to die?

Mitt Romney Memorial Day speech in San Diego

May 29, 2012

Key takeaway from this address in San Diego: He wants an American military “with no comparable power anywhere in the world.”

Or, as I like to say, a military so strong that it doesn’t just tell a potential foe “think again,” it says “don’t even think about it.”

Here’s the speech:

Memorial Day: “The Boys of Pointe du Hoc”

May 28, 2012

At commemoration ceremonies for the 40th anniversary of the D-Day landings, President Reagan focused his speech on the heroes (1) of the 2nd Ranger Battalion who scaled the sheer cliffs of Pointe du Hoc to take out German artillery that threatened the landings at Omaha and Utah beaches.

It was arguably one of Reagan’s finest speeches, one well-worth watching again this Memorial Day:

Saudi woman tells religious police to “drop dead”

May 27, 2012

The Saudi muttawa are the kingdom’s religious police, there to promote virtue and prevent vice — as defined by totalitarian, repressive, misogynistic Sharia law. It’s such a wonderful organization that, in order to preserve the virtue of young girls not properly dressed, they prevented their escape from a burning building, letting them die.

Lovely people, no?

Anyway, and on a much lighter note, some “mutts” tried to tell a Saudi woman to leave a mall when she (if I understand the situation correctly) wanted to try on nail polish where men might see it –THE HORROR!!

The lady, on the other hand, would have none of it:

Heh. What’s the Arabic for “You go, girl!” ?

“Without them, who would we be?”

May 27, 2012

A superb essay by my friend Salena Zito for Memorial Day weekend:

Lyle Smith sat in a wheelchair on the grounds of the national cemetery, not far from the Tomb of the Unknowns.

“I never imagined there would be so many headstones,” he said, looking out over the green rolling hills covered with snow-white markers.

Smith was born seven years after the “War to End All Wars” ended; less than 20 years later, he left his family’s homestead in Columbus, Wis., as a volunteer to serve his country in another world war.

Except for time spent in the European theater, he never ventured far from Wisconsin; he married Shirley and they had a son and daughter, each of whom also had a son and daughter, and those four grandchildren each had a son and daughter as well.

“I’ve led a good life,” Smith, 87, said. “I’ve worked hard, I’ve loved my family.”

He made a living as a skilled carpenter and now volunteers at a senior center. He remains fiercely proud of his military service.

Smith struggled to find words to describe how he felt about being where former comrades are buried alongside soldiers from every U.S. conflict going back to the Civil War.

“It’s overwhelming,” he said. “And I think back to our very first war, our Revolution and those freedom fighters, and I have to thank all of them. Without every one of them, I would not be here.”

Be sure to read the rest.

The jihad in Mexico

May 26, 2012

Writing at the Gatestone Institute site, Raymond Ibrahim details the continuing efforts of Hizbullah and its Iranian paymasters, as well as al Qaeda, to strike at the United States through our porous border using a combination of missionary work and alliance with the drug cartels:

According to a 2010 report, “Close to home: Hezbollah terrorists are plotting right on the U.S. border,” which appeared in the NY Daily News:

“Mexican authorities have rolled up a Hezbollah network being built in Tijuana, right across the border from Texas and closer to American homes than the terrorist hideouts in the Bekaa Valley are to Israel. Its goal, according to a Kuwaiti newspaper that reported on the investigation: to strike targets in Israel and the West. Over the years, Hezbollah—rich with Iranian oil money and narcocash—has generated revenue by cozying up with Mexican cartels to smuggle drugs and people into the U.S. In this, it has shadowed the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Tehran, which has been forging close ties with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, who in turn supports the narcoterrorist organization FARC, which wreaks all kinds of havoc throughout the region.”

Another 2010 article appearing in the Washington Times asserts that, “with fresh evidence of Hezbollah activity just south of the border [in Mexico], and numerous reports of Muslims from various countries posing as Mexicans and crossing into the United States from Mexico, our porous southern border is a national security nightmare waiting to happen.” This is in keeping with a recent study done by Georgetown University, which revealed that the number of immigrants from Lebanon and Syria living in Mexico exceeds 200,000. Syria, along with Iran, is one of Hezbollah’s strongest financial and political supporters, and Lebanon is the immigrants’ country of origin.

A jihadist cell in Mexico was recently found to have a weapons cache of 100 M-16 assault rifles, 100 AR-15 rifles, 2,500 hand grenades, C4 explosives and antitank munitions. The weapons, it turned out, had been smuggled by Muslims from Iraq. According to this report, “obvious concerns have arisen concerning Hezbollah’s presence in Mexico and possible ties to Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTO’s) operating along the U.S.—Mexico border.”

And it’s not just arms-smuggling and infiltration of Arab jihadis that we need to worry about; jihadist organizations are working hard to covert disaffected Mexicans to Salafist Islam:

Long a bastion of Catholicism, southern Mexico is quickly turning into a battleground for soul-savers. Islam, too, is gaining a foothold and the indigenous Mayans are converting by the hundreds. The Mexican government is worried about a culture clash in their own backyard… Muslim women in headscarves have become a common sight….

The Maya regions, particularly Yucatan, have long been a problem for Mexico City. An uprising there lasted from 1847-1901. A century later, will they face an intifada of their own?

Securing the border, as far as is practical, is essential. That doesn’t mean seal it, which would be impossible, but we need far better control over who crosses and why. And intelligence cooperation with the Mexicans, already underway against the cartels, needs to be expanded against the jihadists who seek to exploit our southern neighbor’s problems to get at us.

As Fausta puts it, “border security is national security“.

Because they’re still trying to kill us.

Barack Obama: Can we call him a Socialist now?

May 25, 2012

Oh, my. Take a look at this:

It’s a reminder that the President presented himself as much more progressive during his time in Chicago. In this little-seen advertisement that ran in the Hyde Park Herald in 1996, Obama was listed on a panel sponsored by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), University of Chicago Democrats, and University of Chicago DSA. He also supported gay marriage back then.

Click through to see the image of the flyer.

Of course, long-time readers know that I’ve been certain Obama is a Socialist of one form or another for quite a while. Stanley Kurtz did the CSI: Politics work, and I found the argument convincing. Moreover, there’s never been a whit of evidence that Obama has abandoned or renounced his Socialist politics. At most, he’s given up the revolutionary radicalism he favored in his college years and migrated to an incrementalist, gradualist Socialism that seeks to change the system from within.

But, regardless, he’s still a Socialist.

PS: For those wondering if this really matters, it does. Understanding Obama’s political core gives us an idea of where he would like to take the nation in a second term, and forms a handy point of contrast to Mitt Romney. Also, Socialism has never worked wherever it’s been tried, something to keep in mind to tell people who say they don’t care about ideology, they just care about “what works.”

All you need to know about actress Ashley Judd in one quote (or maybe two)

May 24, 2012

**** Written by Sister Toldjah ****

LoserI’m not one of those conservatives who want popular singers to “shut up and sing”, or want award-winning actors and actresses to “shut up and act.” For one thing, I know some there are some darned smart Hollywood conservatives out there like “Chuck” actor Adam S. Baldwin (currently ripping Alec Baldwin – no relation – a new one) who have strong, intelligent, thoughtful voices that need to be heard and heard often.  And even though I often strongly disagree with much of what Hollywood liberals have to offer in the way of “enlightened opinions”, I respect their right  to express them and in the process make complete a**ses out of themselves on a routine basis, exposing themselves as among the most hateful, intolerant “tolerant” leftists on the planet (see Roseanne Barr, for example, for more) .

Actress Ashley Judd is no exception to that rule.

Judd, who proudly admits to being a staunchly “pro-choice feminist”, recently sat down for an interview for Meet the Press’s “Press Pass” and in one quote told us everything we need to know about who she is and her thought process when it comes to political candidates and policy (bolded emphasis added by me):

“I think that he is a powerful leader, I think that he is a brilliant man I think that he has an incredible devotion to our Constitution, and that he is now able to flower more as the president I knew he could be,” Judd said about Obama.

Uh … “incredible devotion to our Constitution”? Er, yeah. OK. 8-|

For laughs, I link to you a bonus quote from Judd, which brings back to mind something I said about militant feminists recently. Here she is in that same interview on her initial disappointment with Obama, what brought her back to his camp — and what she feels would bring women voters to the polls in the fall to vote for him (bolded emphasis added by me):

The actress and political activist was asked by “Meet the Press” host David Gregory on NBC’s “Press Pass” web show whether she has been disappointed by Obama since he won election in 2008: “To a certain extent I was for the first couple of years. But I also know that President Obama came in inheriting an extraordinary mess, and did his absolute best to do triage… And now I’m pretty fired up again, you know, and I think that he is a powerful leader.”

[...]

The 44-year-old celeb, who was selected as an official delegate for Tennessee at the Democratic National Convention in September, offered her thoughts on what would drive women to the voting booths come November, saying, “As long as the Republicans keep doing really dumb things about women’s reproductive health, that should help energize girls and women in this country.”

Ah yes. He was a huge disappointment for a couple of years, but he’ll save womyn from big bad evil Republicans who wanna keep ‘em poor, barefoot, sick, pregnant, and in the kitchen!   As I said a few weeks ago about “feminists” and men:

“Feminists” should be outraged over [Julia], but they’re not. And won’t be. It’s funny. They’ll tell you they “don’t need a man” but that’s not true at all. They’ll always turn to Uncle Sam … their leader/hero/savior/sugar daddy. Over and over and over again. .

Case in point, Ms. Judd.

Toldjah so.

Green hypocrisy? Nah…

May 24, 2012

Once again, some sanctimonious celebrity Gaea-cultist who wants us to cripple our economies and lifestyles to save the world from a problem that doesn’t exist, global warming, gets caught with his hand in the CO2-cookie jar:

Musician Will.I.Am has been criticised for arriving at a climate change debate in a private helicopter, producing the same amount of CO2 most people do in a month.

The Voice judge had been meeting climate change experts at Oxford University as part of a guest speaking role.

Despite his environmentally-conscious stance on green issues, the Black Eyed Peas rapper, 37, chose to take a private helicopter to the venue.

It is understood the journey, which is a 286 mile round-trip from London, used 71.5 gallons of fuel and released three-quarters of a ton of CO2 into the atmosphere.

He even tweeted pictures of the so-called “hip.hop.copter” for fans to admire, after landing at the Oxford’s University Parks.

From there, the singer used a pedal cycle to travel the remaining few hundred yards to the Radcliffe Observatory Weather Centre.

See? He’s committed to a Green lifestyle! The wealthy, globally conscious one-percenter used a bike to reduce his carbon footprint! An example for all of us: environmentally safe, fossil-fuel free, it’s enough to make any member of the Church of Anthropogenic Global Warming swoon in religious ecstasy.

And pay no attention to the helicopter; I’m sure it will be converted to algae-power real soon.

Convicted domestic terrorist stalks conservative writers

May 23, 2012

I haven’t had time to write about this story, thanks to jury duty, but it’s one that needs to be passed along. Thankfully, my blog-buddy ST is on the case:

When you get into the business of writing about politics and current events, whether you do it for the love of it, the money, or both, you set yourself up for being a target of your political opposition.  It is the nature of the beast. Most of the time  if the opposition isn’t trying to counter your points respectfully,  they’ll just laugh at you and/or call you nasty names over a period of time and move on. Other times they won’t move on, but they won’t carry it any further than just online word wars. But there are also cases where it can escalate way beyond that into territory it never should – where people’s families, homes, and livelihoods are directly targeted, threatened, and negatively impacted by thugs who have absolutely no concept of what “freedom of speech” means, and who believe there are no boundaries/limits whatsoever that they shouldn’t be allowed to cross in trying to “shame” those who they oppose.  Such is the case with Brett Kimberlin, a despicable human being who has waged a disgusting campaign of legal terror and abuse against conservatives who write truthful articles about him and his domestic terrorism past.   The man is vile. Absolutely vile:

Be sure to read the rest, and also the first link to Aaron Worthing’s original report on this nightmare. It’s in situations such as these that free speech meets its test, and when writers Right, Left, Center, or apolitical have to stand together in support of this crucial principle — and of the people under attack.

Let the Brett Kimberlins of the world know they cannot get away with this crap.

Which states are doing better in this lousy economy?

May 23, 2012

States controlled by Republicans, of course. And, conversely, states controlled by Democrats are showing the least improvement. Jeryl Bier at Speak With Authority provides some telling facts:

  • 9 of the 10 states with the lowest current unemployment rates are under Republican control, including six under complete Republican control, one of which is North Dakota with the lowest rate of 3%
  • 5 of the 10 states with highest current unemployment rates are under Democratic control, and the four worst are all under Democratic control, one of which is Nevada with the highest rate of 12%
  • 8 of the 10 states with the greatest improvement from 2009 to 2012 are under Republican control (and 7 of those are under complete Republican control)
  • 7 of the 10 states with the worst performance from 2009 to 2012 are under Democratic control
  • 10 of 17 states with current unemployment rates greater than the national average are under Democratic control
  • The state with the greatest improvement from 2009 to 2012 (36%) is Michigan, under Republican control
  • The two states with the worst performances from 2009 to 2012, Louisiana and Idaho (the rates actually went up,) are under Republican control, but their current rates are still less than the national rate of 8.2%
  • States under Democratic control saw an average decrease of 7.7% in the rate of unemployment
  • States under Republican control saw an average decrease of 15.3% in the rate of unemployment, virtually double the improvement of states under Democratic control

In other words, to the extent Obama can claim a recovering economy during his term, it’s largely due to states being run by people inclined to do the opposite of what Obama recommends.

I call that a Good Idea(tm), one that should be taken to the national level, no?  Republicans should point this out as often as possible between now and November.

SF Supervisor consulted Ouija board over Harvey Milk Navy ship naming vote

May 23, 2012

Via the Associated Press:

SAN FRANCISCO – A San Francisco supervisor says he consulted a Ouija board before city leaders voted on whether to recommend naming a Navy ship after slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Supervisor John Avalos tells the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/KnVnbu) that he believes he made contact with Milk’s spirit and that Milk spelled out letters indicating: “Good riddance to don’t ask, don’t tell.”

The Board of Supervisors approved the non-binding resolution Tuesday on a 9-2 vote.

More details via the SF Chron:

But Supervisor Christina Olague voted against the legislation, not wanting to link Milk to the military.

“I just do believe that there are more appropriate ways to honor somebody who in their last days of their life was opposed to war,” she said, noting Milk’s public opposition to the Vietnam War. “I also have, my entire life, been against the military-industrial complex.”

Supervisor John Avalos said he sees the merits of the arguments on both sides of the debate. He and his City Hall aides turned to a Ouija board to ask for Milk’s opinion.

We “actually put our hands on the Ouija board and the letters g-o-o-d-r-i-d-d-a-n-c-e-d-a-d-t came out. We asked Harvey, and Harvey gave us these letters: ‘Good riddance don’t ask, don’t tell.’ It was quite clear that Harvey Milk would have been opposed to ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ I can honestly say that’s one aspect of this resolution that’s really valid.”

Avalos joined Wiener and seven other supervisors to support the resolution. Only Olague and Supervisor Jane Kim were opposed.

Just another wacky week in California politics ….

(Phineas adds: And yet we wonder why San Francisco is so screwed up.)
