The Solyndra fiasco summarized

June 3, 2012

Obama loan officer at work

The Washington Post has a good summary of the Solyndra loan fiasco. For those not familiar, Solyndra was a “Green energy” company that bet it could make big bucks selling solar panels that were more expensive than those produced in China.

Yeah, I know. Dumb bet.

Anyway, Solyndra applied for a loan from a program for alternative-energy startups that began under George W. Bush. (1) The loan was rush through the approval process by the Obama administration, apparently so Obama and Biden could both use the company for photo ops.

Then everything fell apart.

Solyndra went broke, the more than $500,000,000 in stimulus money (2) vanished down the toilet of dumb ideas, and first crack at any money recovered Solyndra’s corpse goes not to the taxpayers who loaned the money, but to a big-time Obama donor who backed a loan restructuring just before the company went toes-up.

What’s amusing is the Democrats all screaming that this is just election-year politics and that it’s a waste of time investigating this.

Politics? Oh, yeah. Holding the party in power accountable for its decisions is exactly what an opposition party is supposed to do.

But, “waste of time?” On the contrary: this is a drum that should be beaten again and again until election day.

Meanwhile, read the article. If the waste, venality, and (I think) likely corruption doesn’t make you mad, nothing will.

PS: Romney 2012, because adolescents should never be trusted with the national credit card.

RELATED: Earlier posts about Solyndra.

Footnotes:
(1) Note to Mitt Romney: this was a bad idea. Government should not be in the venture-capital business. When you’re in office, kill it.
(2) In other words, Solyndra is part of the over $800 billion dollar Stimulus package that accomplished nothing, except to drive us deeper into debt. So, not only have we lost $500 million on Solyndra, roughly 40% of it has to be paid back to our creditors. But, to hold Obama accountable would just be election year politics. And racist.

Department of Injustice promotes voter fraud

June 3, 2012

To follow up on yesterday’s post about the Obama-Holder DoJ’s efforts to prevent Florida from cleaning up its voter rolls, here’s an excerpt from an editorial at IBD by Andrew Malcolm, who makes no effort to hide his disgust:

Washington has ordered Florida to end its effort to remove ineligible voters from the state’s voter rolls. This is breathtaking. It couldn’t be clearer that the government is actively promoting voter fraud.

(…)

So why shouldn’t voters have to authenticate their identities at the polls and prove they are eligible? Why should voting be so informal and lacking in rules that it invites fraud? Only muddled thinking — or an outright lack of thinking — could fail to make the connection.

It’s sad, but Democrats have made it clear that honest elections are not something they’re interested in. From easy registration that rewards indolence — motor voter laws, for instance — to strident opposition to rules that require voters to show they are who they say they are, the political left clearly likes messy elections.

Why? Columnist George Will answered that more than 20 years ago when he wrote:

“If mild registration burdens are sufficient to defeat a person’s inclination to vote, those burdens probably are filtering out the unmotivated, who are apt to be the uninformed.”

In other words, the Democrats’ opposition to clean elections is their tacit admission that they expect the uninformed to fall for their rhetoric and vote for them.

They also clamor for votes from the felons they coddle, the illegal immigrants they solicit and the criminally minded, politically rabid voters who cast ballots for dead voters or vote multiple times on election day — think of Democratic strongholds like Chicago and Philadelphia, where such shenanigans are common.

Read it all. Andrew’s on fire… and he’s right.

Shell probably wishes the ice were vanishing

June 3, 2012

According to the Church of Anthropogenic Global Warming, one of the signs of the coming eco-apocalypse is the disappearance of sea ice from the North Pole. Lots has been written on this, all meant to scare people into “doing something NOW!!!” about a problem that does not exist — dangerous man-caused climate change. Lots has been written about the vanishing ice. For example:

  • Time Magazine: “Farewell to the Arctic — As We Know It”
  • Mail & Guardian: “Vanishing Arctic Ice Shows No Sign of Returning”
  • CNN: “Arctic Ice to Vanish in Summer, Report Says”

There are hundreds more like these going back years.

All of which makes the following item from the Miami Herald quite amusing:

The heaviest polar ice in more than a decade could postpone the start of offshore oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean until the beginning of August, a delay of up to two weeks, Shell Alaska officials said.

Unveiling a newly refurbished ice-class rig that is poised to begin drilling two exploratory wells this summer in the Beaufort Sea, Shell executives said Friday that the unusually robust sea ice would further narrow what already is a tight window for operations. The company’s $4-billion program is designed to measure the extent of what could be the United States’ most important new inventory of oil and gas.

(…)

“We’re seeing multiyear ice that they’ve not seen in such large quantities in over a decade, and it could impact our ability to start the well,” Slaiby said. Of particular concern, he said, is the region of the Chukchi Sea around the company’s Berger Prospect – potentially the crown jewel of the company’s offshore oil inventory – which in normal years would be accessible by mid-July. This year, it may be unreachable until late July or early August.

Of course, in the fair’s-fair department, the article does mention thinning ice in Canada — so the ice is melting somewhere! (While growing somewhere else…) And, as any good Warmist will tell you, this could only be a temporary upsurge in a long, scary declining trend. So… Quick! Sign Kyoto!

More likely, though, is that polar ice goes through natural cycles of forming and melting, perhaps influenced by winds, among other non-anthropogenic causes. (But those winds do carry the evil CO2. Hmmm…) In fact, there’s strong evidence that the North Pole has frozen and cleared several times in the past. (For example)

Of course, climate alarmists won’t let little things like facts get in the way of a good theory. They have computer models, after all!

So be it. Meanwhile, we can sit back and laugh while Nature shoves another grapefruit in their face.

Phineas Fahrquar:

Next, Mayor Bloomberg has police make sure you cut your meat into small pieces…

Originally posted on International Liberty:

Mayor Bloomberg is a wretched human being. He’s an ultra-rich limousine liberal who wants to impose his views on ordinary people.

I’ve previously written about his statist efforts to ban bake sales, and I’ve noted with mixed feelings his proposal to tell food stamp recipients what they’re allowed to buy.

Now he wants to criminalize large sodas. Holman Jenkins writes about this silly idea in the Wall Street Journal.

Mike Bloomberg’s move to regulate the size of sodas sold in his city illustrates why it’s a good thing he is a mayor of New York and not the czar of all the Russias. American big cities tend to be one-party states to begin with, but at least their totalitarian impulses end up being merely cute because they’re so easy to evade. Under the Bloomberg plan, any cup or bottle of sugary drink larger than 16 ounces at a…
