Why former Rep. Artur Davis is switching from Democrat to Republican

May 31, 2012

**Posted by Sister Toldjah

The Hill reports (hat tip):

Former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama is officially leaving the party for the GOP, he announced Tuesday.

“Wearing a Democratic label no longer matches what I know about my country and its possibilities,” Davis wrote on his website after lamenting that “this is not Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party.”

The former congressman will also switch his party registration to in Virginia, where he now lives.

Davis has been rumored as a possible GOP congressional candidate in Northern Virginia, and in the statement he doesn’t rule out the possibility, although his long statement indicates if he runs it could be for either the House or the statehouse and would be in 2014 or afterwards.

The one-time Democratic rising star had grown critical of the party in recent years, was the only African American member of the House to vote against Democrats’ health care reform law, and became increasingly vocal about his disagreements with the Democrats after losing a gubernatorial primary in 2010.

Davis, who has been an occasional guest contributor at National Review Online, has a fairly comprehensive website where you can go to learn more about who he is, his views on the issues, etc. Here’s his full post explaining his party switch.

Even though I wasn’t crazy about “Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party” back in the day, I have to say it would be much more preferable to the far left mentality we see in most elected Democrats today – especially in the case of our radicalized celebrity President and certain members of Congress. It goes without saying that Obama Democrats are bad news for America. It took a lot of guts for Davis to switch parties in this highly charged climate and then openly announce such – even though he is not in Congress anymore – because he is black and few “minority” groups ever feel the wrath of “tolerant” leftists like black people and gay people who either have never toed the Democrat party line or who wake up from doing so at some point in their lives. And right now when all black Democrats are supposed to fall in line behind Barack Obama come election time, Davis making his views public should be considered all the more bold.

I commend him for the stance he’s taken, and am looking forward to reading about him and learning more from him regarding his policy ideas in the future. Welcome to the party, Mr. Davis.

#PPact issues ridiculous statement in response sex selective abortion exposé video

May 29, 2012

**** Written by Sister Toldjah ****

First, in case you haven’t heard:

Live Action says Planned Parenthood and other U.S. abortion providers are willing to assist in the termination of baby girls for pregnant women who choose abortion because they want to have baby boys. And the pro-life abortion watchdog says its video series and a new website will expose it all.

“This was a multi-state, national investigation demonstrating that this is a widespread problem across our country,” Live Action president Lila Rose told The Daily Caller in an interview Monday.

“First of all, the statistics and studies indicate that we are adding to the growing problem across the world of sex-selective targeting of unborn girls for abortion. We are going to be demonstrating — starting with this video from Texas — that the abortion industry in the United States is aiding and abetting this horrific problem.”

The first in what Live Action says is a series of videotaped incidents exposing American abortion facilities’  willingness to assist in sex-selection abortions took place at a South Austin, Texas Planned Parenthood clinic. In the footage, a Planned Parenthood counselor appears to readily assist and advise a Live Action actor who said she was trying to obtain an abortion if her baby is female.

Here’s the video:

In case you don’t have time to watch the full video, here’s the YouTube description (bolded emphasis added by me):

AUSTIN, May 29 — Today, Live Action released a new undercover video showing a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Austin, TX encouraging a woman to obtain a late-term abortion because she was purportedly carrying a girl and wanted to have a boy. The video is first in a new series titled “Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America,” exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.

“I see that you’re saying that you want to terminate if it’s a girl, so are you just wanting to continue the pregnancy in the meantime?” a counselor named “Rebecca” offers the woman, who is purportedly still in her first trimester and cannot be certain about the gender. “The abortion covers you up until 23 weeks,” explains Rebecca, “and usually at 5 months is usually (sic) when they detect, you know, whether or not it’s a boy or a girl.” Doctors agree that the later in term a doctor performs an abortion, the greater the risk of complications.

The Planned Parenthood staffer suggests that the woman get on Medicaid in order to pay for an ultrasound to determine the gender of her baby, even though she plans to use the knowledge for an elective abortion. She also tells the woman to “just continue and try again” for the desired gender after aborting a girl, and adds, “Good luck, and I hope that you do get your boy.”

Life News’ Steven Ertelt has excerpts of the two Planned Parenthood statements released today. The second one will result in a commencing of eyerolls, my dear readers:

“Six weeks ago a former staff member serving in an entry-level position did not follow our protocol for providing information and guidance when presented with a highly unusual patient scenario. Planned Parenthood insists on the highest quality patient care, and if we ever become aware of a staff member not meeting these high standards, we take swift action. Within three days of this patient interaction, the staff member’s employment was ended and all staff members at this affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters. Today opponents of Planned Parenthood are promoting an edited video of that hoax patient encounter.”

“Recently, opponents of Planned Parenthood conducted hoax patient visits with hidden video cameras and are now using edited videotapes to promote false claims about our organization and patient services. In highly unusual and scripted scenarios, hoax patients sought services related to sex selection.”

[...]

Planned Parenthood condemns gender bias but refuses to condemn sex-selection abortions or say their centers will deny them.

“Gender bias is contrary to everything our organization works for daily in communities across the country. Planned Parenthood opposes racism and sexism in all forms, and we work to advance equity and human rights in the delivery of health care. Planned Parenthood condemns sex selection motivated by gender bias, and urges leaders to challenge the underlying conditions that lead to these beliefs and practices, including addressing the social, legal, economic, and political conditions that promote gender bias and lead some to value one gender over the other.”

[...]

“The world’s leading women’s health and rights organizations, including the World Health Organization, do not believe that curtailing access to abortion services is a legitimate means of addressing sex selection, and have made clear that gender bias can only be resolved by addressing the underlying conditions that lead to it. And we agree. We support efforts that ensure girls and women have access to economic opportunity, including fair wages, basic health care, political participation, education, and a life free of violence and discrimination. Planned Parenthood works to ensure women and their families have access to high-quality nonjudgmental health services free of coercion, supported by information and counseling.”

In other words, sex-selection abortions are fine as long as other efforts are undertaken to try to stamp out gender bias.

Yep. Isn’t it disgusting the way so-called “pro-women” forces on the left engage in dangerous, warped pretzel logic in order to “condemn” sex-selective abortions on the basis that they “discriminate against women” yet in the same breath they’ll tell you a woman shouldn’t be prevented from having elective abortions for any reason whatsoever?

I have written many times on the deeply disturbing practice of sex-selective abortions and the “feminist” movement’s disgusting hypocrisy/immorality on the matter. My comments in this June 11 post are fitting in response to today’s Live Action reveal:

As I’ve asked before, what’s the big deal to pro-aborts when it comes to aborting a baby on the basis of its sex? If it shouldn’t be an issue to abort an unborn child because it will “interfere” with your social life or college education, why should we be concerned about the boy baby bias in countries like China and India? Sure, it equates to blatant discrimination against women, but what’s the more important “right”? The right to not be discriminated against on the basis of your sex, or the “right” to choose whether or not you want to terminate your unborn child?

The pro-abortion group Center for Reproductive Rights came out years ago in support of China’s ban on sex-selective abortions, on the basis of being against discrimination of women. I guess their rationale is the more women we have in the world, the more opportunities we have for indoctrinating them to support … a woman’s right to choose, for whatever reason she sees fit. While the writer of the above piece does not support anti-sex-selective abortion legislation, the “we need more women in the world” mindset is one she appears to take. In a nutshell, she supports changing the pro-boy “cultures” in China and India so as to get them to “respect” women more so they won’t interfere in any “private” decision relating to having an abortion – even if it means having an abortion for whatever reason she wants to give, including on the basis of the baby’s sex.

I swear, you simply cannot make this stuff up.

Oh, and yes – sex-selective abortions do happen here in the US. Read more on that here.

But, shhhh! Don’t tell the likes of the feministas at “progressive feminist” blogs like Jezebel, etc. We wouldn’t want them to get hurt straddling that “pro-choice/pro-woman/anti-sex-selective abortion” fence or anything.

All you need to know about actress Ashley Judd in one quote (or maybe two)

May 24, 2012

**** Written by Sister Toldjah ****

LoserI’m not one of those conservatives who want popular singers to “shut up and sing”, or want award-winning actors and actresses to “shut up and act.” For one thing, I know some there are some darned smart Hollywood conservatives out there like “Chuck” actor Adam S. Baldwin (currently ripping Alec Baldwin – no relation – a new one) who have strong, intelligent, thoughtful voices that need to be heard and heard often.  And even though I often strongly disagree with much of what Hollywood liberals have to offer in the way of “enlightened opinions”, I respect their right  to express them and in the process make complete a**ses out of themselves on a routine basis, exposing themselves as among the most hateful, intolerant “tolerant” leftists on the planet (see Roseanne Barr, for example, for more) .

Actress Ashley Judd is no exception to that rule.

Judd, who proudly admits to being a staunchly “pro-choice feminist”, recently sat down for an interview for Meet the Press’s “Press Pass” and in one quote told us everything we need to know about who she is and her thought process when it comes to political candidates and policy (bolded emphasis added by me):

“I think that he is a powerful leader, I think that he is a brilliant man I think that he has an incredible devotion to our Constitution, and that he is now able to flower more as the president I knew he could be,” Judd said about Obama.

Uh … “incredible devotion to our Constitution”? Er, yeah. OK. 8-|

For laughs, I link to you a bonus quote from Judd, which brings back to mind something I said about militant feminists recently. Here she is in that same interview on her initial disappointment with Obama, what brought her back to his camp — and what she feels would bring women voters to the polls in the fall to vote for him (bolded emphasis added by me):

The actress and political activist was asked by “Meet the Press” host David Gregory on NBC’s “Press Pass” web show whether she has been disappointed by Obama since he won election in 2008: “To a certain extent I was for the first couple of years. But I also know that President Obama came in inheriting an extraordinary mess, and did his absolute best to do triage… And now I’m pretty fired up again, you know, and I think that he is a powerful leader.”

[...]

The 44-year-old celeb, who was selected as an official delegate for Tennessee at the Democratic National Convention in September, offered her thoughts on what would drive women to the voting booths come November, saying, “As long as the Republicans keep doing really dumb things about women’s reproductive health, that should help energize girls and women in this country.”

Ah yes. He was a huge disappointment for a couple of years, but he’ll save womyn from big bad evil Republicans who wanna keep ‘em poor, barefoot, sick, pregnant, and in the kitchen!   As I said a few weeks ago about “feminists” and men:

“Feminists” should be outraged over [Julia], but they’re not. And won’t be. It’s funny. They’ll tell you they “don’t need a man” but that’s not true at all. They’ll always turn to Uncle Sam … their leader/hero/savior/sugar daddy. Over and over and over again. .

Case in point, Ms. Judd.

Toldjah so.

SF Supervisor consulted Ouija board over Harvey Milk Navy ship naming vote

May 23, 2012

***Written by Sister Toldjah***

Via the Associated Press:

SAN FRANCISCO – A San Francisco supervisor says he consulted a Ouija board before city leaders voted on whether to recommend naming a Navy ship after slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Supervisor John Avalos tells the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/KnVnbu) that he believes he made contact with Milk’s spirit and that Milk spelled out letters indicating: “Good riddance to don’t ask, don’t tell.”

The Board of Supervisors approved the non-binding resolution Tuesday on a 9-2 vote.

More details via the SF Chron:

But Supervisor Christina Olague voted against the legislation, not wanting to link Milk to the military.

“I just do believe that there are more appropriate ways to honor somebody who in their last days of their life was opposed to war,” she said, noting Milk’s public opposition to the Vietnam War. “I also have, my entire life, been against the military-industrial complex.”

Supervisor John Avalos said he sees the merits of the arguments on both sides of the debate. He and his City Hall aides turned to a Ouija board to ask for Milk’s opinion.

We “actually put our hands on the Ouija board and the letters g-o-o-d-r-i-d-d-a-n-c-e-d-a-d-t came out. We asked Harvey, and Harvey gave us these letters: ‘Good riddance don’t ask, don’t tell.’ It was quite clear that Harvey Milk would have been opposed to ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ I can honestly say that’s one aspect of this resolution that’s really valid.”

Avalos joined Wiener and seven other supervisors to support the resolution. Only Olague and Supervisor Jane Kim were opposed.

Just another wacky week in California politics ….

(Phineas adds: And yet we wonder why San Francisco is so screwed up.)

#WarOnWomen: SC AFL-CIO president uses bat to repeatedly bash Haley effigy

May 22, 2012

***Written by Sister Toldjah***

ABC News sets the scene:

Donna Dewitt, the outgoing president of the South Carolina AFL-CIO, is seen in this video bashing a piñata of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s face while Dewitt and her colleagues were at a retreat in Columbia, S.C. Saturday afternoon.

“Well I will say, she looks like a tough old girl here,” Dewitt says as she gears up to swing at the piñata.

She repeatedly hits the piñata, which bears the phrase “Unions are not needed, wanted or welcome in South Carolina” below Haley’s face. In her State of the State address this year, Haley said, “We’ll make the unions understand full well that they are not needed, not wanted and not welcome in the state of South Carolina.” Dewitt whacks the piñata down and continues to wail away at it once it’s fallen. Onlookers cheer her on, urging her to continue hitting the piñata.

“Give her another whack. Whack her again,” a woman screams.

“Hit her again” another man says.

The video is around 30 seconds. Click below to watch it:

Dewitt defended her actions:

Dewitt told ABC News she has no regrets about the incident and said there was “no ill intent” in what she was doing. Dewitt said her colleagues brought the pinata and were using it as a “memoir” of Haley’s words and actions towards unions in her time as governor.

“They made it and I would have played the game with them no matter it would have been pin the tail on the donkey with Nikki Haley’s face on it. I still would have played,” Dewitt told ABC News over the phone. ”There was no ill intent. We were certainly have a good time. I’m not mad or angry.”

“We’ve been the brunt of her comments now for two years and that’s what the whole thing was. She’s been whacking at us over the last two years,” Dewitt, who has been president of the South Carolina AFL-CIO for the past 16 years and will retire at the end of June, continued.

Do I think Dewitt was fantasizing about that REALLY being Gov. Haley she was beating down with that bat? No (and btw, if it were a man who had been doing the hitting, would NOW have stepped in? Nah.). Nevertheless, the imagery is disturbing – and dare I say a blatant violation of President Obama’s established New Tone Order where we’re all supposed to be civil to each other over tea and toast and not say or do anything that would make our fellow man feel compelled to go out and commit a violent act. Since the mainstream media happily went along with him in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords by doing their level best not to use words or display actions that might “incite violence”, I’m sure they – along with liberal pundits and politicos – will be lined up to express their outrage and condemnation at the very thought that someone, especially a person in a position of power and influence like Dewitt, would symbolically bash the pinata head of her organization’s chief opposition – and a nationally known Governor at that.

The video has proved to be a big embarrassment for the national AFL-CIO, which reportedly wants the video taken offline (via Michelle Malkin). Not quite sure why the concern, considering much worse tactics displayed by the AFL-CIO in the past towards its political opposition. Maybe they’re just trying to clean up their act during a crucial election year. Unfortunately for Big Labor, neither their paper trail – nor their video trail – can be erased from history.

Why you shouldn’t believe the “public option may be off the table” spin

August 17, 2009

Michelle Malkin’s got a good link round-up on the back and forth that went on over the weekend about whether or not the “public option” part of ObamaCare was now officially or even unofficially off the table, and she explains why ObamaCare opponents shouldn’t get their hopes up over the discussion because what’s this strategy really is all about is floating a “trial balloon” to see how nuts the far left goes over the idea of ditching the public option. With key Senate races picking up steam, the WH is trying to figure out whether or not they can dump the public option – for now – and still maintain the magic 60 number.

President Obama laughably claimed over the weekend that ObamaCare was “not about politics.” As Ed Morrissey explained yesterday, it most certainly is:

It’s not about politics? Barack Obama wants to impose a sweeping takeover of the health-care industry by the federal government, and he has the audacity to claim that politics has nothing to do with this? It has everything to do with it. Any government program has politics at its basis by definition.

Government will mandate comparative effectiveness models to influence treatment by government-funded providers. Those decisions will get made not by doctors or patients, but by elected officials who primarily are lawyers, not physicians. Does anyone believe that politics has nothing to do with the imposition of this kind of rationing?

Democrats have tried a number of strategies to sell ObamaCare to an increasingly skeptical and angry public. At first, they tried insisting that everyone hated their own status quo, until Gallup polls showed that 83% of people were satisfied with their current coverage. After that, they tried demonizing insurance executives. Does that sound as though politics has nothing to do with this proposal?

Up to 10% of medical costs in the US relate to lawsuits. Providers overuse resources in order to practice defensive medicine to protect themselves from predatory and abusive lawsuits. Yet not one sentence in the ObamaCare proposals in Congress deal with tort reform, which would immediately cut costs in the health-care industry. Trial lawyers, not coincidentally, heavily contribute to the Democratic Party currently writing all these bills. Are we to believe that’s not all about politics?

This is all about politics, which is why Obama had to write the op-ed in today’s Times. If he loses this battle, he’s wounded politically, and the rest of his agenda will be in deep trouble.

And don’t forget – it “isn’t about me [Obama]” either, even though a Dem Congressman quoted the President last month as saying if ObamaCare didn’t pass that it would “destroy” his presidency. So I guess the answer is to destroy healthcare in order to save his presidency. :-? If he thinks that’s going to solve his problems, he’s got another thing coming.

Profiles in liberal hypocrisy

August 14, 2009

Meet Scott Lehigh – liberal columnist for the Boston Globe. It seems he, like many other elite lefties, has taken offense over the thousands of citizens across the country who have made it known at town halls in their communities that they do not support ObamaCare. They need to learn how to be more “civil,” he claims … but he has an interesting way of demonstrating so-called “civility.” In a column titled “When the kooks take the stage,” Lehigh scribbles (via Don Surber):

IT’S HARD TO SAY what’s more amusing, the wild-eyed rants at town hall meetings or the conservative attempts to portray those snarling sentiments as genuine mainstream anger about the president’s health care plans.

Some Republicans are gleeful in the hope that the testy town hall encounters will derail Obama’s signature initiative.

Question: Do they really think the country is dopey enough to mistake microwave mobs staging Potemkin Village protests as an accurate expression of true American opinion?

If so, they’re delusional.

Most people have a basic sense of civility. When asking a question of an elected official at a public meeting, they try to do so in a way that is intelligent and reasonably respectful rather than belligerent and boorish.

Not these crowds. The other night, listening to talk radio, I heard a learned political philosopher explain why: You simply can’t be expected to be civil when everywhere around you, tyranny is supplanting liberty in the land.

But alas for the conservative fringers, as a mode of communication, the angry, ill-informed, accusatory questions stop a wee bit short of being truly persuasive. I don’t know many people who say: “See those agitated kooks making daffy charges? I want to be like them.’’

Well, sure, Glenn Beck. But not counting crazed right-wing media types, I mean.

[...]

All we’ve learned here is something we already knew: This nation never has to worry about suffering from a shortage of kooks, cranks, and ideologues.

Just don’t try to tell us they are level-headed, mainstream Americans.

Hmmm. When I looked up the word “civility” in the dictionary, here’s what I found:

1. courtesy; politeness.
2. a polite action or expression: an exchange of civilities.
3. Archaic. civilization; culture; good breeding.

Apparently, considering his use of the terms “kooks,” “cranks,” and “microwave mobs” (what the hell does that one mean, anyway?), Lehigh doesn’t know what the word “civility” means – wonder if he’s as clueless on the definition of the word “hypocrite,” which, frankly, suits him to a “t”?

As a side note, it’s hilarious how he went to great lengths to describe the alleged “Astroturfing” by conservatives, giving the issue a whole paragraph, while only giving a passing nod to liberal “Astroturfing“:

“Yes, I know that the White House has now ginned up its allies too, some of whom have been loud and aggressive.”

Gee – ya think?

Loser. (How’s that for “civility”?)

Report: John Edwards to admit soon that he is father of mistress’ baby

August 13, 2009

Via WRAL:

Raleigh, N.C. — Sources have told WRAL News that they expect former U.S. Sen. John Edwards to admit that he is the father of his former mistress’ 18-month-old daughter.

Edwards, a two-time Democratic presidential candidate, confessed last August to having an affair with Rielle Hunter, who served as a videographer on Edwards’ 2008 campaign. He has denied fathering her daughter, saying his relationship with Hunter ended before the child was conceived.

The name of the girl’s father isn’t disclosed on her birth certificate.

Andrew Young, a long-time Edwards aide, initially claimed to be the father of Hunter’s child, but he is reportedly writing a book in which he will claim Edwards is the father.

[...]

Sources said Edwards’ public admission could come before the end of the criminal investigation.

I’m trying to figure out why he didn’t make this admission when he first confessed to the affair? I mean, at that point his political career was pretty much over – why not go all the way? Then again, as I’ve noted numerous times before, this man is a slick pathological liar and will dodge and weave and lie on just about any issue.

I wish his illegitimate young daughter the best life has to offer. Hopefully she’ll never know how hard her father tried to deny the fact that she was his.

Move over, Joe! Gaffetastic Obama is hot on your heels

August 11, 2009

Here’s wishing Phineas a great, relaxing vacation. He deserves it. I’m happy to guestblog in his absence. :)

This is so, so priceless:

[At the NH town hall] Mr. Obama said health care overhaul would free up doctors to concentrate on treatment because they would not be prodded to schedule unnecessary tests. He said the fact that Medicare allowed Mr. Anderson to return to Lipitor showed that the federal system worked. And he said that a government-run public option should not put private insurers out of business, but rather force them to be more competitive, even going so far as to compare the competition between the two to the competition among Federal Express, U.P.S, and the Postal Service.

“U.P.S. and FedEx are doing just fine,” Mr. Obama joked. “It’s the post office that’s always having problems.”

Er, um … I’m speechless, but Phil Klein picks up the slack:

The gaffe arose from the inherent contradiction of those arguing for the introduction of a government government-run plan. On the one hand, Obama and other supporters of the idea argue that we need to have a strong government plan to create more efficiency, drive down prices, and “keep private insurers honest.” Yet at the same time, they have to make it appear weaker to push back against those of us who argue that it will threaten private insurance and move us toward a single-payer system. So then you get statements in which Obama, in the course of arguing for a government-run system, takes a shot at the government-run post office.

Here’s the video:

Sometimes the best gifts you get are from your opponents themselves. It’d be great if the RNC got creative and use that line in an ad like they did with Kerry’s “I voted for it before I voted against it” line, but I won’t hold my breath.
