An Inconvenient Truth: new glaciers forming in Scotland

Ben Nevis: winter is coming?

Once again the Earth defies the Received Truth of the Cult of Global Warming. Among the signs and portents of coming DOOM!! is supposed to be the disappearance of glaciers, indicating that the Earth is warming dangerously.

Well, apparently no one sent Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain, the memo, because researchers there have found evidence of new glaciers being born:

Hazards common in arctic and alpine areas but described as “extremely unusual” in the UK during the summer have been found on Ben Nevis.

A team of climbers and scientists investigating the mountain’s North Face said snowfields remained in many gullies and upper scree slopes.

On these fields, they have come across compacted, dense, ice hard snow call neve.

Neve is the first stage in the formation of glaciers, the team said.

The team has also encountered sheets of snow weighing hundreds of tonnes and tunnels and fissures known as bergschrunds.

The large, deep cracks in the ice are found at the top of glaciers.

Glaciers retreat and advance all the time, as evidenced by the uncovering of ancient forests and archaeological discoveries coming from times when Man was not pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, something Warmists would rather you not think about.

And yet now, in this period of supposed catastrophic Man-caused climate change, when life on Earth hangs by a thread unless we do something now to stop a warming that hasn’t taken place for over 17 years, it seems new glaciers are forming and growing. As Anthony Watts writes at WUWT:

This is how ice ages start – a buildup of snow which does not melt in the Summer, which leads to a positive feedback loop, as the growing ice sheet reflects more and more sunlight back into space.

Now, I’m not predicting a new Ice Age or “global cooling,” nor is Anthony. But as I think Earth’s warming and cooling are better explained by natural cycles rather than human intervention, and since we already have historical experience of the Little Ice Age that seemed to mirror a decline in sunspot activity, a decline that again may be happening, I think an extended period of cooling is more likely than catastrophic warming.

These newborn glaciers could be another sign of that.

Receding Swiss glaciers incoveniently reveal 4000 year old forests – and make it clear that glacier retreat is nothing new

Phineas Fahrquar:

I’ve read of this happening before, archaeological ruins being revealed by retreating glaciers, showing that it’s nothing new. Rather an inconvenient truth for climate alarmists who point to glaciers as proof that we are all DOOMED.

Dr. Christian Schlüchter’s discovery of 4,000-year-old chunks of wood at the leading edge of a Swiss glacier was clearly not cheered by many members of the global warming doom-and-gloom science orthodoxy.

This finding indicated that the Alps were pretty nearly glacier-free at that time, disproving accepted theories that they only began retreating after the end of the little ice age in the mid-19th century. As he concluded, the region had once been much warmer than today, with “a wild landscape and wide flowing river.”

Global warming, the disaster movie?

April 16, 2010

Why not? In addition to baking the Earth (except it’s getting cooler), raising the seas (except they’re not), and killing the polar bears (except they’re flourishing), global warming also causes volcanoes to erupt:

A thaw of Iceland’s ice caps in coming decades caused by climate change may trigger more volcanic eruptions by removing a vast weight and freeing magma from deep below ground, scientists said on Friday.

They said there was no sign that the current eruption from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier that has paralysed flights over northern Europe was linked to global warming. The glacier is too small and light to affect local geology.

“Our work suggests that eventually there will be either somewhat larger eruptions or more frequent eruptions in Iceland in coming decades,” said Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a vulcanologist at the University of Iceland.

“Global warming melts ice and this can influence magmatic systems,” he told Reuters. The end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago coincided with a surge in volcanic activity in Iceland, apparently because huge ice caps thinned and the land rose.

We believe the reduction of ice has not been important in triggering this latest eruption,” he said of Eyjafjallajokull. “The eruption is happening under a relatively small ice cap.”

In other words:

“Global warming isn’t in play here, but we’re taking this opportunity to scare you into agreeing to all the harebrained, economy-killing measures the UN, the IPCC, and delusional national governments can think up to deal with a problem that does not exist. Thank you.”

As a commenter at Watts Up With That? pointed out, if the magma chamber is so close to the surface as to be affected by a glacier, then it’s already itself melting the glacier, no CO2 needed.

Next thing you know, global warming will be blamed for stock-market crashes.

RELATED: In fact, undersea volcanoes may explain the calving of huge glaciers in the Antarctic peninsula, while the rest of the Antarctic ice sheet is expanding. It’s also a possible reason for the receding Arctic ice, though that’s expanded again in recent years. Again, no AGW bugbear required.

The glaciers are melting! The glaciers are melt… Eh, maybe not.

January 18, 2010

This is happening so often these days that it’s almost not news anymore: yet another dire prediction from the Cult of Anthropogenic Global Warming has been shown to be as false as an Obama campaign promise and will have to be withdrawn:

World misled over Himalayan glacier meltdown

A WARNING that climate change will melt most of the Himalayan glaciers by 2035 is likely to be retracted after a series of scientific blunders by the United Nations body that issued it.

Two years ago the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a benchmark report that was claimed to incorporate the latest and most detailed research into the impact of global warming. A central claim was the world’s glaciers were melting so fast that those in the Himalayas could vanish by 2035.

In the past few days the scientists behind the warning have admitted that it was based on a news story in the New Scientist, a popular science journal, published eight years before the IPCC’s 2007 report.

It has also emerged that the New Scientist report was itself based on a short telephone interview with Syed Hasnain, a little-known Indian scientist then based at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.

Hasnain has since admitted that the claim was “speculation” and was not supported by any formal research. If confirmed it would be one of the most serious failures yet seen in climate research. The IPCC was set up precisely to ensure that world leaders had the best possible scientific advice on climate change.

Professor Murari Lal, who oversaw the chapter on glaciers in the IPCC report, said he would recommend that the claim about glaciers be dropped: “If Hasnain says officially that he never asserted this, or that it is a wrong presumption, than I will recommend that the assertion about Himalayan glaciers be removed from future IPCC assessments.”

Apparently no one bothered to check the original story, which hadn’t been replicated or peer-reviewed, yet it was put into the IPCC report as an established fact. On top of that, the “scientist” in charge of the glaciers section of that report has admitted that he’s not an expert in the field. One would think the IPCC would put a glaciologist in charge of a report dealing with glaciers, but, no. It was left to genuine experts in glaciers to reveal just how ludicrous the IPCC’s claims about the Himalayan glaciers were.

Given the revelations about the infamous hockey-stick graphs and the Climategate scandal, add to them this latest humiliation, and one has to wonder how anyone anymore takes seriously anything the alarmist crowd asserts. The IPCC reports are supposed to represent the best science in order to guide policy makers when they grapple with the (nonexistent) problem of global warming. At this rate, they might as well just consult their local paper’s astrology column.

UPDATE: Ah, here comes the fine stench of corruption. The head of the IPCC, Dr. Rajenda Pachauri, defended the claims about the Himalayan glaciers while heading an institute that was seeking funding based on those same claims. Read the whole post to get an idea of how disinterested these guys are. (Hint: not very.)

The church crumbles! The Goracle wrong?? Aaiiee!!

December 4, 2009

The Cult of Anthropogenic Global Warming was rocked yet again yesterday. From out of the Netherlands came news that the glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the melting of which Al Gore used as an iconic symbol of the dangers posed by man-caused climate change, melt and form due to a natural cycle:

Newspapers and news sites in the Netherlands today extensively broke the news of the findings of a research team led by Professor Jaap Sinninghe Damste — a leading molecular paleontologist at Utrecht University and winner of the prestigious Spinoza Prize — about the melting icecap of the Kilimanjaro, the African mountain that became a symbol of anthropogenic global warming.

Professor Sinninghe Damste’s research, as discussed on the site of the Dutch Organization of Scientific Research (DOSR) — a governmental body — shows that the icecap of Kilimanjaro was not the result of cold air but of large amounts of precipitation which fell at the beginning of the Holocene period, about 11,000 years ago.

The melting and freezing of moisture on top of Kilimanjaro appears to be part of  “a natural process of dry and wet periods.” The present melting is not the result of “environmental damage caused by man.”

Professor Damste studied organic biomarker molecules in the sediment record of Lake Challa, near Mount Kilimanjaro, and reconstructed the changes and intensity of precipitation in this part of Africa over the last 25,000 years. They observed an 11,500 year cycle of intense monsoon precipitation.

In the dry period between 12,800 and 11,500 years ago, Kilimanjaro was ice-free.

Uh-oh. It seems Kilimanjaro’s glaciation is driven by the Sun, not those nasty greenhouse gases. Arriving on the heels of the scandal involving scientific fraud at one of the centers of climate-alarmist advocacy, this has to make all but the most die-hard Gaea-worshiper question whether they’ve been had in the biggest con-job since Nixon said “I am not a crook.”

I mean, what are all those people who hang on the Goracle’s every word to do?

I know, I know.The science is settled.

Have faith.  Praying
