Lara Logan attacked because she was “Jewish”

February 16, 2011

In a follow up to yesterday’s nauseating story, we see two themes that are central to Islam: contempt for  women and hatred of Jews.  Tragically for Lara Logan, they came to a focus in her. From The New York Post:

“60 Minutes” correspondent Lara Logan was repeatedly sexually assaulted by thugs yelling, “Jew! Jew!” as she covered the chaotic fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo’s main square Friday, CBS and sources said yesterday.

The TV crew with Logan, who is also the network’s chief foreign correspondent, had its cameras rolling moments before she was dragged off — and caught her on tape looking tense and trying to head away from a crowd of men behind her in Tahrir Square.

“Logan was covering the jubilation . . . when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration,” CBS said in a statement. “It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.

“In the crush of the mob, [Logan] was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers.

“She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning,” the network added. “She is currently in the hospital recovering.”

A network source told The Post that her attackers were screaming, “Jew! Jew!” during the assault. And the day before, Logan had told Esquire.com that Egyptian soldiers hassling her and her crew had accused them of “being Israeli spies.” Logan is not Jewish.

Her real religious affiliation, if any, is immaterial. Logan had become the embodiment of the paranoia and conspiracy-mongering in a society that can take seriously claims that Israel has trained sharks to attack Muslims or is sending AIDs-carrying women to Egypt. And Jews have been the declared (by Muslims) enemies of Islam since the days of Muhammad, the invocation of the Muslim massacre of the Jews at Khaybar being a rallying cry to this day. Indeed, the Muslim version of the anti-Christ will be born of a Jew and lead an army of Jews. Thus calling Logan a Jew, as well has her “immodest behavior,” justified her rape. If she had just worn a niqab and stayed in her room like a proper woman… .

But don’t you dare say Islam isn’t tolerant or doesn’t respect women.

UPDATE: The Washington Post reports that Logan is home with her family and adds this chilling note:

When Logan returned Saturday to the United States, she was described as being in shock and not speaking, the source added.

Poor woman. To think what she and her family are going through right now.

Brave journalists document life in Hell on Earth

December 5, 2010

The mainstream media in the US and its allies on the Left like to congratulate themselves for “speaking truth to power,” as if they were taking any real risk for questioning or even insulting conservative politicians. What a joke; the only risk they truly face is a sprained shoulder from patting themselves on the back so much.

They’re brave only in the way a bully is brave: tough while surrounded by like-minded bullies.

If you want to see truly brave journalists –amateurs, at that– then have a look at this report from the Telegraph on people who risk their lives to report on what is really happening in North Korea:

With its ruthless dictator, network of forced labour camps and iron grip of its ruling party, North Korea is the last country one might expect to see a middle-aged woman berating a policeman for demanding a bribe.

But extraordinary video images smuggled out of North Korea, combined with reports of graffiti and posters critical of the regime, indicate a growing willingness among a previously cowed public to speak out and demand change.

Such dissent would once have been unthinkable in the reclusive state, but now hunger and plummeting living standards are now triggering demands for freedom – something that no North Korean has ever experienced.

Evidence of the rising tide of discontent has been captured on film by a small group of “citizen journalists”, who newsgather at great personal risk to themselves. They then carry the footage across the heavily guarded border into China.

In one dramatic clip, a woman who is trying to board a truck to take her to work flies into a rage after a uniformed policeman demands a bribe. She shouts at him and waves her finger in his face until he backs away. Emboldened, other people come to her aid, shouting at the officer.

The clip ends with the unidentified woman yelling: “This cop is an idiot!”

I truly wonder if that woman lived through week.

Be sure to watch the video at the link above, and keep in mind that the woman interviewed at the start is 23 years old. This isn’t civilization; it’s life reduced to a state of nature, people nearly stripped of their humanity. If there is a Hell on Earth, then either North Korea or Zimbabwe must be it.

The journalists themselves are incredibly brave, risking their lives to get these videos to their Japanese sponsor.  They risk their families, too, for North Korea punishes not just the “criminal,” but relatives, too, often through several generations in their infamous prison-camp system.

The very existence of people willing to document life inside Kim Jong-Il’s dystopia, plus others who challenge members of the security forces or write protest graffiti, shows the state’s hold is cracking over the miserable men and women trapped there. According to the article, it has been at least since a disastrous famine in 1999 that killed roughly 1,000,000 people. More recently, Pyongyang’s currency reforms and crackdown on private markets have lead to inflation, the loss of savings, and renewed food shortages, creating such a problem that the government had to back off, at least a bit.

All of these events and more are eroding the people’s fear of their government, making them so angry that they stop being afraid. It reminds me of the events in Romania in 1989, when the people finally found their courage and overthrew their dictator. The look of fear and confusion on Ceaucescu’s face as the crowd unexpectedly booed him marked the moment Commmunism began to fall there.

With luck, the brave amateur journalists of North Korea will be able to capture a similar look on the face of Kim Jong-Il.

I’m not at all surprised

June 7, 2010

In fact, I predicted it. Helen Thomas, harridan and antisemitic “journalist,” has retired:

Helen Thomas, the legendary White House reporter who paved the way for female journalists covering politics, will retire following a firestorm over comments she made about Jews in Israel.

On Monday, Hearst News Service, her latest employer, announced the immediate retirement of Thomas.

Thomas, who turns 90 in August, told a rabbi at a White House event last month that Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go back to Germany and Poland or the United States. Her comments were caught on videotape and widely circulated.

The remarks caused an uproar, although she had immediately apologized.

It wasn’t much of an apology. In fact, it sounded more like she was just sorry for being caught.

Good riddance.

PS. Can we also rid ourselves of the likes of Pat Buchanan, Al Sharpton, and Jessie Jackson? The atmosphere of our political life would improve immeasurably.

What if the MSM had been at D-Day?

June 6, 2010

A bit of rueful humor for the anniversary of the Normandy landings. The Combat Report asks, what if the modern mainstream media had covered D-Day?

BONUS: Some neat color footage of the war in France, from the landings at Normandy to the liberation of Paris.

UPDATE: How our President honored D-Day in a time of war, no less. Quote:

“Security is not something that comes from the barrel of a gun,” he told the crowd.

He just does not get it.  Doh

WALK-BACK: Hold the outrageous outrage, it was  Archbishop Tutu, one of the honorees at the party the President attended, who said that stupid quote. See the second link. (But Obama still doesn’t get it.)

Unclear on the concept, 1st amendment edition

May 31, 2010

We revere free speech in the United States, rightly considering it one of the essential liberties of a free people. In fact, we consider it so important that our ancestors made the protection of free speech a part of the Bill of Rights:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

(Emphasis added)

So, I have to ask, what part of “no law … abridging” does Michigan State Senator Bruce Patterson not understand?

A Michigan lawmaker wants to license reporters to ensure they’re credible and vet them for “good moral character.”

Senator Bruce Patterson is introducing legislation that will regulate reporters much like the state does with hairdressers, auto mechanics and plumbers. Patterson, who also practices constitutional law, says that the general public is being overwhelmed by an increasing number of media outlets–traditional, online and citizen generated–and an even greater amount misinformation.

“Legitimate media sources are critically important to our government,” he said.

He told FoxNews.com that some reporters covering state politics don’t know what they’re talking about and they’re working for publications he’s never heard of, so he wants to install a process that’ll help him and the general public figure out which reporters to trust.

“We have to be able to get good information,” he said. “We have to be able to rely on the source and to understand the credentials of the source.”

There’s a face-palm moment in almost every paragraph. Does it not occur to the esteemed senator that giving government, over which the press exercises a watchdog function, the power to decide which is a legitimate source of information and which isn’t might have a bit of a chilling effect on that same free press? If you say or write the wrong thing, do you lose your license? And how has that “licensed journalism” thing worked out in, say, Cuba, Senator?

Patterson’s bill, for which he can find no co-sponsors (It seems some pols still have a sense of shame), would impose the following requirements:

According to the bill, reporters must provide the licensing board proof of:

  • “Good moral character” and demonstrate they have industry “ethics standards acceptable to the board.”
  • Possession of a degree in journalism or other degree substantially equivalent.
  • Not less than 3 years experience as a reporter or any other relevant background information.
  • Awards or recognition related to being a reporter.
  • Three or more writing samples.

The article goes on to say registration with the state would be voluntary and that no one would be barred from acting as a journalist in Michigan without a license, but, come on. Inevitably, some schmuck legislator who’s mad at the press would want to make registration a requirement “for the public good.” And the very act of registration almost certainly will create a legitimate/illegitimate distinction in the mind of the public that in turn will put pressure on journalists (staff or independent)  to submit to licensing in order to maintain credibility.

Even if this doesn’t violate the letter of the 1st Amendment, it sure as the Devil goes against its spirit. And this guy practices constitutional law? Between him and con-law professor Barack Obama, maybe we should consider licensing constitutional lawyers, instead.

Really, Senator, I think the good people of Michigan are smart enough to decide what is a legitimate news source and what isn’t without the state’s help.

Media bias? Surely you jest!

May 8, 2010

At Pajamas Media, Bob Owens has a good article on the double standard of the mainstream media when it comes to covering politically motivated violence:

During the recent health care debate in Congress, the media was quick to latch on to every perceived slight or hurt, real or imagined, directed at Democrats. They offered wall-to-wall coverage of phoned-in threats of violence against Democratic representatives, even as they hastened to downplay the stray bullet that crashed through an office belonging to Republican Eric Cantor.

These same media outlets were quick to pounce on reports that a handful of Democratic offices were vandalized, and they seemed to relish in discussing the glory-hound, former militia leader who sought to claim credit for the handful of broken windows.

The message from the media was clear: any violence against their liberal allies will be broadcast far and wide, and any threat or slur will be published as fact, no matter how dubious the claim.

The reverse, sadly, is not true, and that is not a recent development.

When speculating about why the media refuses to honestly cover the violence perpetrated by the Left, Owens comes to a conclusion that’s a mirror image of one I came to a few years ago when The New Republic published the fraudulent stories of Scott Thomas Beauchamp. Then, I speculated that TNR fell for Beauchamp’s slanderous stories about the US military in Iraq because they wanted to believe them. In the case of the MSM and left-wing violence, Owen offers the flip-side: they don’t want to believe, and so they pretend as much as they can that it does not exist.

Neither is healthy for journalism or democracy in America.
