Marital rape against Islamic law

April 17, 2010

Having written time and again about how Islam represses and justifies violence against women, it’s nice to be able to cite a scholar of Islam who says “No, it doesn’t, and knock it off:”

There is no law in Yemeni legislation that defines a minimum age for marriage. However, there are Islamic legislations that prevent men from forcing their wives into intercourse.

Renowned religious scholar Mohammed Hassan said that the Islamic Jurisprudence prohibits forced intercourse between the husband and wife.

“If a woman is forced to bed by her husband, she should know that he is committing a sin and should be punished according the jurisprudence. She should not think that Islam discriminates against women, it is the sole act of this man,” he said.

He emphasized that, in Islam, marriage is a relationship based on kindness and empathy as read in the Roman’s Chapter in the Quran verse 21: “And among His signs is that He created spouses for you from yourselves for you to gain rest from them, and kept love and mercy between yourselves; indeed in this are signs for the people who ponder.”

Sadly, Mr. Hassan’s opinions are in a distinct minority. One can only hope that this someday changes.

Will: a VAT only if you get rid of the income tax

April 17, 2010

George Will, declaring that he could support a VAT only if the 16th amendment is repealed:

When liberals advocate a value-added tax, conservatives should respond: Taxing consumption has merits, so we will consider it — after the 16th Amendment is repealed.

A VAT will be rationalized as necessary to restore fiscal equilibrium. But without ending the income tax, a VAT would be just a gargantuan instrument for further subjugating Americans to government.

(…)

Because the income tax is not broadly based, it radiates moral hazard: Its incentives are for perverse behavior. The top 1% of earners provide 40% of that tax’s receipts; the top 5% provide 61%; the bottom 50% provide 3%. So the tax makes a substantial majority complacent about government’s growth.

Increasingly, the income tax is codified envy. A VAT is the political class’s recourse when the resources of the minority that is targeted by the envious are insufficient to finance ravenous government.

My only quibble is with his use of the word “liberal;” there’s nothing liberal about the dominant wing of the Democratic Party. It’s merely a thin mask covering a progressive-statist face.

Did the earth move for you, Fatima?

April 17, 2010

Forget all that nonsense about fault lines and plate tectonics. As always, the scholars who run the Fascist Dictatorship Islamic Republic of Iran have given us the answer: sex causes earthquakes.

A senior Iranian cleric has claimed that dolled-up women incite extramarital sex, causing more earthquakes in Iran, a country that straddles several fault lines, newspapers reported on Saturday.

“Many women who dress inappropriately … cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes,” Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi told worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran.

“Calamities are the result of people’s deeds,” he was quoted as saying by reformist Aftab-e Yazd newspaper. “We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers.”

I’m confused. I thought Jews caused earthquakes.  Does that mean sexy Jews are the greatest danger? Just to be safe, we’d better keep all those inappropriately dressed samba dancers away from the Middle East.

Seriously, this is another example of Islamic misogyny. It is the woman’s fault for exciting the man, who just can’t help himself – the woman is made responsible for the man’s sexual behavior, thus she must be controlled, repressed, and forced to dress like Cousin Itt going to a formal. Otherwise, bad things will happen.

What a civilization.
