Back to Square One: Unlawful Collusion with Green Pressure Groups Should Doom U.S. EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Regulation

July 30, 2015

Oh, really? Why, oh why am I not shocked to find collusion between Green statists in the government and climate alarmist groups?

Watts Up With That?

EPA_collusion
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Energy & Environment Legal Institute (E&E Legal), a 501 (c) (3) watchdog group, released an investigatory report, Back to Square One: Unlawful Collusion with Green Pressure Groups Should Doom U.S. EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Regulation  and an appendix of source documents.  The report, which is based on e-mails and other documents obtained under numerous Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests and litigation, details illegal activities by EPA staff, colluding with certain environmental lobbyists to draft EPA’s greenhouse gas (GHG) rules behind the scenes, outside of public view, and to the exclusion of other parties.  More importantly, it clearly shows that EPA must start anew if it wishes to regulate GHGs. (A two-minute companion video is available for use.)
With EPA’s GHG rules going final any day, it is critical to inform the public of the emails detailed in this report for what they show about how…

Good news! ISIS is now recruiting in Pakistan!

July 28, 2015
Seal of the new Caliphate

Going global.

When the world’s most vicious jihad organization goes fishing for members in a nearly-failed nuclear-armed state that sports its own jihadi terror groups and an intelligence service that “leans jihad,” what could go wrong?

Lots.

An apparent Islamic State recruitment document found in Pakistan’s lawless tribal lands reveals that the extremist group has grand ambitions of building a new terrorist army in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and triggering a war in India to provoke an Armageddon-like “end of the world.”

The 32-page Urdu-language document obtained by American Media Institute (AMI) and reviewed by USA TODAY details a plot to attack U.S. soldiers as they withdraw from Afghanistan and target American diplomats and Pakistani officials.

(…)

The document was reviewed by three U.S. intelligence officials, who said they believe the document is authentic based on its unique markings and the fact that language used to describe leaders, the writing style and religious wording match other documents from the Islamic State, also known as ISIL and ISIS. They asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The undated document, titled “A Brief History of the Islamic State Caliphate (ISC), The Caliphate According to the Prophet,” seeks to unite dozens of factions of the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban into a single army of terror. It includes a never-before-seen history of the Islamic State, details chilling future battle plans, urges al-Qaeda to join the group and says the Islamic State’s leader should be recognized as the sole ruler of the world’s 1 billion Muslims under a religious empire called a “caliphate.”

“Accept the fact that this caliphate will survive and prosper until it takes over the entire world and beheads every last person that rebels against Allah,” it proclaims. “This is the bitter truth, swallow it.”

Read the rest: ISIS’ long-term goal is a major attack on India — Hindus are polytheists, therefore fair game under Islam. Almost as bad, they’re a parliamentary democracy, and democracy is a sin under sharia law (men making laws, a role reserved to Allah alone). And, unspoken, they’ve kicked Muslim Pakistan’s tail in three wars now. Can’t let polytheists get away with that, not when you come from a culture obsessed with honor and shame.

Their ultimate goal, per the document, is to use war on India to generate an apocalyptic war –literally, the “final battle”– with America, India’s ally. Presumably that would bring about the Islamic End Times, when they get to kill all the Jews.

Lovely people, aren’t they?

This new recruiting drive isn’t without its problems, however. First, well, the Taliban was there first. And neither likes the other. Thus a recruiting drive is likely to lead to armed clashes. Second, the Pakistani Taliban have a sort of, off-and-on modus vivendi with the Pakistan government. Heck, members of Pakistan’s ISI, their intelligence agency, may also be Taliban. ISIS, on the other hand, wants to recreate the caliphate and lead it, meaning no more government of Pakistan. That, shall we say, might meet with resistance.

Still, ISIS has been remarkably successful and has the will to carry out its jihad dreams. Everyone in the area –Pakistanis, Afghans, Indians, and Americans, had better be keeping a careful watch.

(Video) The truth about CO2, and the corruption of Greenpeace

July 27, 2015

Two videos today from Prager University, both narrated by Dr. Patrick Moore, a PhD in Ecology from the University of British Columbia and one of the founders of the environmental activist group Greenpeace.

In the first, Dr. Moore discusses the nonsense surrounding the almost superstitious dread of carbon dioxide among climate alarmists. Notably, and as has been mentioned several times on this blog and elsewhere, Dr. Moore points out the inconvenient truth that the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has in the past been up to ten times higher than it is now, without the world ending. That, in fact, we are still in an era of relatively low CO2 concentrations. Also, he mentions a truth so obvious that only climate hysterics need to be told it: CO2 is plant food. In fact, the ideal atmospheric concentration of CO2 is 4-5 higher than it is now. We can already see the benefits of increasing CO2 as the Earth grows greener, contrary to the Cult of Climate Change’s dire predictions.

But enough of me ranting. Here’s Dr. Moore, not ranting:

The second video is Dr. Moore’s tale of how he came to be a founder of Greenpeace, in its day an organization dedicated to a mix of scientific conservationism and anti-war politics. He relates how the movement changed over time to an anti-scientific, almost anti-human dogma, which at its farcical worst declared banning the element chlorine as a goal, going so far as to label it “the Devil’s element.”

Nothing religious or cultish about that.

Here’s Dr. Moore explaining why he finally had to leave Greenpeace:

That’s the trouble with organizations that get captured by their most ardent activists: they drive out the moderates who could act as a brake on their worst tendencies, which, left unchecked, wreck their credibility.

Seattle: #RaiseTheWage, choose to work less

July 26, 2015
Didn't pay attention

Seattle economics adviser

Okay, I have to admit it: I was wrong about the choices facing business owners when a jurisdiction mandates a minimum wage increase. On several occasions, I’ve written something like the following:

Labor is a cost, because the business owner has to provide wages and, often, benefits that cost him more money. When a government mandate increases that cost, the business owner has three choices: pass the cost along to the customer, who may decide it’s too much and stop shopping there; cut employee hours and stop hiring to save on labor costs, thus costing potential jobs and putting a burden on workers still employed; and, finally, just decide it’s not worth it anymore and close up shop. In the low-margin bookseller business, Borderlands’ owner chose the last course as the only one viable.

Well, it seems I didn’t figure on one other possibility: employees demanding to work fewer hours.

Evidence is surfacing that some workers are asking their bosses for fewer hours as their wages rise – in a bid to keep overall income down so they don’t lose public subsidies for things like food, child care and rent.

Full Life Care, a home nursing nonprofit, told KIRO-TV in Seattle that several workers want to work less.

“If they cut down their hours to stay on those subsidies because the $15 per hour minimum wage didn’t actually help get them out of poverty, all you’ve done is put a burden on the business and given false hope to a lot of people,” said Jason Rantz, host of the Jason Rantz show on 97.3 KIRO-FM.

And…

The notion that employees are intentionally working less to preserve their welfare has been a hot topic on talk radio. While the claims are difficult to track, state stats indeed suggest few are moving off welfare programs under the new wage.

A minimum wage is a form of economic redistribution and welfare, taking money from business owners and giving it to the employees in the name of “fairness” and “justice.” The idea, as averred in the last quoted paragraph, is to help get people off government aid. Good intentions, no?

Well, we all know what’s said about using good intentions as paving material. Like so many welfare programs, the minimum wage creates a perverse incentive to not increase one’s income, for fear of losing desirable benefits. Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute has a wonderful chart and post explaining this very problem, what he calls a “poverty trap.” By raising the minimum wage, in addition to all the other problems it causes, Seattle is creating its own poverty trap, one that encourages people to work less.

Now how, I ask progressives, is that “progress?”

PS: Read the whole article for other problems caused by Seattle leftists’ good intentions arrogant, economically ignorant self-righteousness.

The 2015 El Niño is shaping up to be a big one

July 23, 2015

The last predicted El Nino was a washout, as I recall, but, with California parched, let’s hope this one comes through. Read on for Anthony Watts’ warning though, that climate alarmists will almost certainly blame this on “global warming.” Sigh…

Watts Up With That?

1997-2015-el-nino

From NOAA NNVL:

July 2015 Ocean Temperatures –
Conditions are currently warming up in the Pacific, and the NOAA Climate Prediction Center expects a greater than 90% chance that El Niño will continue through the winter and most likely into the spring. This image shows the July 13-19, 2015 sea surface temperature departure from the 1981-2010 average. In addition to the warmer than normal waters generated by the El Niño conditions, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation is also creating persistently higher than normal sea surface temperatures in the northeastern Pacific.

El Niño conditions are on the rise in the Pacific Ocean, this could potentially become a record event that might even beat the great 1997 El Niño as seen in the image above. We aren’t there yet, but the Climate Prediction Center has an advisory out that suggests we might be soon.

California could see an end to their drought situation, with the…

The real reason North Korea has mandatory voting

July 21, 2015
The only vote that counts.

The only vote that counts.

You might think it’s because the world’s largest prison camp masquerading as a nation thinks this is genuine democracy: after all, even though there’s just one candidate (Party-approved, natch) for each post, you can still vote your disapproval by putting your ballot in another box for “no” votes. But nobody does that, probably because of the obvious wisdom of the Party’s choices, guided as they are by Juche spirit and the wisdom of Kim Jong Un.

You might also be a bit more cynical and think it’s so they can boast a 99.7 percent turnout to prove how enthusiastic the people are about their People’s Democracy life in Hell.

But you’d be wrong. Per the CNN article, here’s the real reason the “mountain bandits” have compulsory voting:

The compulsory universal turnout, analysts and defectors say, serves another important purpose for the government.

The election acts as an unofficial census, allowing the government to discover who has defected or otherwise gone missing. And that spells big trouble, not only for the missing voter, but also for his or her family.

Get it? If you don’t vote, your family probably gets sent to Kim’s gulag.

President Obama, who has himself shown authoritarian tendencies, has expressed interest in mandatory voting.

Let’s not encourage him, okay? (1)

Financial system compromised by Iran deal

July 20, 2015

Yet more fall out from this miserable deal.

Money Jihad

The deal with Iran doesn’t just give a murderous regime $100 billion in sanctions relief.  It gives them ongoing access to the international financial system.  It will make their funding of Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps so much easier.  Expert analysis from Mark Dubowitz and Jonathan Schanzer writing in Foreign Policy last week:

It Just Got Easier for Iran to Fund Terrorism

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, did not enter into Tuesday’s historic deal with six world powers to reset relations with the West. It was the promise of more than $100 billion in sanctions relief, rather, that greased the wheels of the recently completed diplomacy in Vienna. And though the windfall of cash will certainly strengthen its position, the real prize for Iran was regaining access to a little-known, but ubiquitous banking system that has been off-limits to the country since March 2012.

Another excuse for ‘the pause’ – it’s a ‘blip’ from volcanoes, or something

July 20, 2015

“It’s anything –ANYTHING!!– except solar cycles,” pleaded the desperate climate scientist who was beginning to realize he’d been wrong for over 20 years.

Watts Up With That?

From the University of Edinburgh:

Warming slow-down not the end of climate change, study shows

A slow-down in global warming is not a sign that climate change is ending, but a natural blip in an otherwise long-term upwards trend, research shows.

In a detailed study of more than 200 years’ worth of temperature data, results backed previous findings that short-term pauses in climate change are simply the result of natural variation.

The findings support the likelihood that a current hiatus in the world’s year-on-year temperature increases – which have stalled since 1998 – is temporary.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh analysed real-world historic climate records from 1782 to 2000, comparing them with computerised climate models for the same timescale.

They were able to separate the influence on climate trends of man-made warming – such as from greenhouse gas emissions – and of natural influences in temperature – such as…

The Painful Truth About Snowden

July 19, 2015

Did Moscow sacrifice Edward Snowden to protect their moles within the NSA and other agencies? Fascinating history and speculation from Mr. Schindler.

The XX Committee

Since the saga of Edward Snowden went public just over two years ago, I’ve had a lot to say in the media about this sensational case. That’s gotten me loads of push-back, not to mention trolling, but my take on the case — particularly that it’s a planned foreign intelligence operation that operates behind the cover of “freedom” and “civil liberties” — has increasingly become accepted by normals.

In the first place, that Snowden shows no sign of leaving Putin’s Russia, not exactly a bastion of liberty, has made all but his most uncritical defenders wonder what’s going on here. The clear damage that Snowden’s vast revelations have done to Western counterterrorism and security likewise has raised doubts about motives. And that’s not been helped by the fact that very few of Snowden’s purloined secrets have to do with NSA domestic operations. The overwhelming majority expose foreign intelligence activities that…

Green Fail: windfarms contaminate the water supply?

July 18, 2015
"Epic fail"

What could go wrong?

I don’t see what the problem is; since Human activity causes global warming, shouldn’t this be condign punishment for our sins against Gaea?

Campaigners in Scotland are calling for a full, independent investigation into allegations that wind farms are contaminating water supplies across large areas of Scotland.

They have written to the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Energy Secretary Amber Rudd calling for an immediate halt on all wind farm development north of the border until the government can guarantee safe drinking water for everyone.

The problem first came to light when residents living near Europe’s largest wind farm, the 215 turbine Whitelee farm in Ayrshire, began to suffer from diarrhoea and severe vomiting. Tipped off by an NHS report which mentioned that difficulties in treating the water supply may pose health risks, local resident Dr Rachel Connor, a retired clinical radiologist, started digging into the council’s water testing results.

She found that, between May 2010 and April 2013, high readings of E.coli and other coliform bacteria had been recorded. In addition, readings of the chemical trihalomethane (THM), linked to various cancers, still births and miscarriages, were way beyond safe limits.

Scottish Power, who run the wind farm, denied causing the pollution but admitted that they hadn’t warned residents that their water supplies may be contaminated.

In other words, “we couldn’t have caused this problem, but maybe we should have warned you.” Right. So we’ve gone from wind farms chopping up birds to poisoning the water supply. They’re not economically viable without public subsidy, they never meet their promised power generation or reliability, but, hey, they do give you diarrhea. And maybe kill your unborn child. All to fight catastrophic man-caused global warming, a problem that does not exist.

What on Earth are you complaining about?

Now, of course, nothing is proven yet, but I’ll wager dollars to donuts there’s more to this than the hysteria over fracking and earthquakes.

UPDATE: Welcome Instapundit readers! Thanks, Glenn!

Jihad: French foil plot to behead general

July 16, 2015

France flag

To paraphrase Trotsky: You may not be interested in the jihad, but the jihad is interested in you.

A gang of four “radicalised Muslims” were arrested on Monday by French specialist counter-terror police after a wiretap on one suspect handed officers intelligence on their general beheading plot. The plan was to make a symbolic attack on the military base that French special forces use to stage expeditionary troops for interventions in theatres like Mali and the Central African Republic. The gang aimed to kill on the 7th of January 2016, the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo killings in Paris, reports TheLocal.fr.

The gang, whose members were 16, 17, 19, and 23-years-old planned to film the killing on a high-definition ‘GoPro’ camera and upload the footage to the internet. The eldest member, called the ‘ringleader’ by police, was a former marine in the French navy discharged last year for ‘bad behaviour’. Calling himself ‘the Emir’, the radicalised Muslim apparently wanted revenge on his former bosses – and his military training may very well have left him a capable killer.

The plot was unveiled after the 17 year old member was placed under police surveillance because of his extremist activity on social media. Making contact with other ‘French’ Jihadists, some of whom are now in jail, the young would-be killer expressed a desire to go abroad to fight leading the police to wiretap his phone. Learning details of the plot to behead a senior soldier, they took the gang into custody on Monday.

Note the highlighting: one of those radicalized Muslims was former French military. In other words, as we’ve seen before, we are creating trained, disciplined soldiers who then turn against us. The question is inevitable: how far can the remaining Muslim soldiers in the French and other Western militaries be trusted? It’s an ugly question to ask, because it unavoidably tars those Muslims loyal to their countries, but neither can it be ignored. Not when one is familiar with the Islamic doctrines of wala wa bara (“Loyalty and Enmity”) and taqiyya — religiously sanctioned deception.

Western militaries have been the most successful for centuries because, in part, they have superb unit cohesion and discipline: each man in a unit can count on the other to do his job, and officers can rely on their troops to obey orders.

What happens, then, if a general can’t be sure if his troops will attack the enemy, or him?

Meanwhile, in Egypt: France isn’t the only one with a jihad problem, as ISIS warriors successfully fire a missile and set an Egyptian warship ablaze.

Could Planned Parenthood be any more ghoulish? @ppact

July 14, 2015

They’re killing unborn infants by the carload and getting taxpayer money to do it. It’s for women’s health, you know, and therefore our progressive betters have told us it’s a-okay. Don’t fret. No worries.

I mean, what’s a little organ trading among friends?

In shocking video obtained by the Center for Medical Progress and first reported by Live Action News, a top Planned Parenthood executive is seen attempting to sell body parts from aborted babies.

Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s senior director for medical services, is caught on video bragging about how she aborts babies in such a way that their body parts and organs can later be sold for profit.

“We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part,” Nucatola tells actors posing as organ traffickers. “I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”

“I’d say a lot of people want liver,” Nucatola continued. “And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps.”

Somewhere in Hell, Dr. Mengele laughs and smiles in approval.

Remember ACORN? They lost their government funding and went out of business when they were caught engaging voter fraud. (1)

But this? This is something I’d expect under a totalitarian regime, such as China; not here.

This is just evil.

ACORN lost its funding for mere voter fraud. It seems like it should be a no-brainer to cut off Planned Parenthood for harvesting organs from aborted babies. Beyond that, there should be one or more criminal investigations. At the very least, beyond the laws cited in the video, the 1984 National Organ Transplant Act (PDF) forbids the sale of human organs. Hello, FBI? That’s your cue.

Beyond that, think about Dr. Nucatola calmly discussing dismembering humans and selling their remains over wine and lunch.

And then get sick.

ISIS: near-massacre averted in Kosovo?

July 13, 2015
Seal of the new Caliphate

Seal of the new Caliphate

If true, this is another illustration of something that needs to be said again and again: We’re at war, and the enemy is still trying to kill us.

This time, by poisoning the water supply:

Kosovo authorities say they have cut off the water supply to tens of thousands of people in the capital after police arrested five suspects linked to Islamic State who were allegedly planning to poison a reservoir.

Pristina’s water authority said the water supply was shut off early on Saturday “because of security issues”, and that samples were being tested for suspicious substances.

Police say officers patrolling the Badovac reservoir saw three of the men, whose identities have not been revealed, behaving suspiciously. The reservoir supplies almost half of Pristina, a city of more than 200,000 people. Another two suspects were arrested elsewhere in Kosovo.

All face terrorism charges, police said, without giving any further details.

Let’s make one the clear from the start: Kosovo is a majority-Muslim province, and the victims of these brave knights of Allah raving psychos would mostly have been their fellow Muslims. But, that’s okay; their government is allied with the US against ISIS, making them “hypocrites,” one of the worst sins in Islam, and justifying action against them. That they would also kill potentially thousands of innocent Muslims –men, women, children, the elderly– is not their problem, for it is Allah’s will, and surely he will know his own when they appear for judgement before him.

(Seriously , the fatalism in Islam is appalling, and I’ve no doubt the well-read Salafi jihadist could find justification for everything I described above in the Qur’an and hadiths. And it wouldn’t be cherry-picking, either.)

But ISIS won’t limit its depredations to Muslims who don’t meet their standards. No, they have repeatedly threatened the West and America, they are recruiting from among us, and our infrastructure is dangerously vulnerable — including our water supplies (PDF). The people in Pristina were lucky that their police and counterintelligence were alert enough to avert a disaster, but we can’t always count on being so lucky.

Not when we’re dealing with fanatics who think they’re on a mission from God.

North Korea: Kim Jong-Un promotes poor fool to admiral

July 12, 2015
"I've got some bad news, boss..."

“Wait. We need another new defense minister??”

Considering the last holder of the office was executed by anti-aircraft gun for the crime of lèse-majesté (1), you have to wonder how thrilled the new guy was to get the big news:

A press release from North Korean state media, announcing a senior-level military meeting, called Pak Yong Sik the country’s defense minister.

This is the first time North Korea has publicly stated that Pak was serving in that role.

Hyon Yong Chol, the country’s last defense minister, was last mentioned by state media on April 29.

Chol was killed by fire from an anti-aircraft gun at a military school in front of hundreds of people in Pyongyang around April 30, the South Korean Intelligence Service (NIS) reportedly told members of its parliament.

The article notes that General Hyon might still be alive, meaning the story of the anti-aircraft gun was just Kim playing with our minds. Honestly, I kind of doubt that.

Regardless, I’d suggest to the new defense minister that he take No Doz before all meetings.

PS: Oh, come on. How many of you wouldn’t read that news and think immediately of Admiral Ozzel?

(Video) How to insult progressives

According to Pat Condell, it’s easy: tell them the truth, especially if it’s politically incorrect.

Trigger Warning: Pat is an atheist, so he’s not shy about his opinion of all religions, not just Islam.

Can we kill them, now? ISIS burns mothers and children alive.

July 10, 2015
Seal of the new Caliphate

Destroy them

There’s an old joke that the first rule of Texas Common Law is “He needed killing.”

Meet some people who desperately need it:

ISIS have reportedly executed five mothers and their children after the women refused to allow their children to become child soldiers in the ranks of the jihadi group.

The victims are all believed to be from the Sunni Albu Nimr tribe, well known for their long time resistance in fighting against Al Qaeda and ISIS in the Iraqi province of Anbar.

The claim was described in graphic detail by tribal leader Sheikh Naim al-Kaoud, who said that the women and children were rounded up by ISIS gangs and set on fire in the streets.

According to the London based Saudi newspaper Sharq al-Awsat, the tribal leader told how the women had resisted the militants demands for them to release their children and join ISIS.

The barbaric punishment was carried out in the neighbourhood of  Al-Jamiya, inside the ISIS held city of Heet.

I’m a firm believer that, to justify a major US military intervention, there has to be an intersection to American strategic interests and moral values. We’re not French; we don’t do “raison d’Etat” very well. We have to feel good about what we’re doing, too.

ISIS is a case where our national and moral interests intersect. Not only has ISIS made it quite clear they want to attack us (and they will, bet on it) and not only do they threaten to throw the Near East, a region vital to our interests, deeper into chaos. No, they also:

  • They destroy priceless ancient relics (aside from those they sell on the black market), robbing civilization of its heritage.
  • They behead people
  • They burn them alive
  • They throw them off buildings for being gay and shoot them if they survive
  • They drown people in cages
  • They take non-Muslim women as sex slaves and sell them in slave markets

How is it not moral, how is it not right, how is it not just, how is it not obligatory on good people to send an expeditionary force to destroy these demons in human skin? We don’t have to do this alone, though we should if no one else will join us. With sufficient American leadership, an international force could be put together to crush these vermin.

Wait. Did I just say “American leadership?” Sorry, people suffering under ISIS. You’ll have to wait until sometime in 2017.

But ISIS still needs killing.

PS: For those wary of another massive military commitment to that godforsaken region (and understandably so), there is a middle course that might well work — special operations forces combined with heavy, but targeted airstrikes.

Pudgy, nuclear-armed dictator shoots another official. Because he can.

July 8, 2015
"You are too short! banished!"

“You let my turtles die? You die!”

You think this guy knew the game was up the moment he saw Kim Jong Un’s first frown?

The manager of a terrapin farm who incurred the wrath of Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, has been executed.

State-run media released pictures in mid-May of a clearly furious Mr Kim berating officials of the Taedonggang Terrapin Farm after the dictator arrived to provide “field guidance”.

KCNA reported that the farm for breeding terrapins had been set up on the orders of Kim Jong-il, the father of the present ruler of North Korea, but all the baby terrapins in the tanks died.

The officials tried to explain that a lack of electricity meant that water could not be pumped into the tanks, while there were also shortages of feed for the terrapins.

Mr Kim was additionally outraged that part of the farm had not been set aside to “educate employees in the revolutionary history” of Kim Jong-il, KCNA reported.

The dictator dismissed the officials’ explanations, saying that “only sighs of defeatists come from units” that fail to “uphold and glorify the leadership exploits of the great leaders and the party”.

He added that their excuses about problems with water, electrical supplies and equipment were “nonsensical complaints”, the Daily NK web site reported.

Sources in Pyongyang told NK News that the manager of the terrapin farm was shot dead shortly after Mr Kim’s visit.

Pour encourager les autres, dontcha know?

And, please. A lack of electricity to provide fresh water to creatures that live in water, and a lack of feed for them? Did he really expect that to be a sufficient reason to let them die from polluted water and starvation? He was obviously a traitor and a counterrevolutionary South Korean-American Imperialist stooge. It’s a good thing Dear Leader Tiny Psycho III was there to ferret out his anti-terrapin sabotage!

Per the Telegraph article, is it any wonder that North Korean officials are starting to defect in large numbers? I’m only surprised no one’s drawn a pistol and shot this loon in an act of preemptive self-defense.

Via Rick Moran, who goes on to compare this lunatic regime to that in Tehran. The one we’re about to help get nuclear weapons, too.

I’ll be in my bunker in the Sierras.

Must be a coincidence: San Francisco raises minimum wage, Chipotle’s raises prices

July 7, 2015
No way!!

No way!! Magical thinking doesn’t work??

I predicted this from the start. Oh, okay, I didn’t predict exactly *this*, per se, but, on the occasion of a popular San Francisco bookstore closing because of the minimum wage hike, I wrote the following:

Labor is a cost, because the business owner has to provide wages and, often, benefits that cost him more money. When a government mandate increases that cost, the business owner has three choices: pass the cost along to the customer, who may decide it’s too much and stop shopping there; cut employee hours and stop hiring to save on labor costs, thus costing potential jobs and putting a burden on workers still employed; and, finally, just decide it’s not worth it anymore and close up shop. In the low-margin bookseller business, Borderlands’ owner chose the last course as the only one viable.

Borderlands Bookstore chose option three: close the doors and put everyone out of work. It just wasn’t worth it to fight to stay in business anymore.

Let us not be surprised, then, that the Chipotle’s restaurant chain chose option one: pass the costs on to the consumer.

• In our weekly survey of ten of Chipotle’s markets, we found the company implemented price increases in half of the surveyed markets this week—San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Orlando. In most markets, the price increases have been limited to beef and average about 4% on barbacoa and steak, toward the lower end of management’s expectation for a 4% to 6% price increase on beef.

• San Francisco, however, saw across-the-board price increases averaging over 10%, including 10% increases on chicken, carnitas (pork), sofritas (tofu), and vegetarian entrees along with a 14% increase on steak and barbacoa. We believe the outsized San Francisco price hike was likely because of increased minimum wages (which rose by 14% from $10.74 per hour to $12.25 on May 1) as well as scheduled minimum wage increases in future years (to $13 next year, $14 in 2017, and $15 in 2018).

Say it after me, kiddies: Economics wins; math wins. Rinse, repeat. No matter what the progressive tooth fairy told the San Francisco Board of Commissars Supervisors, when you mandate a wage increase, something has to give. In this case, the “giver” is “Workaday Joe,” the poor sap who has to bear the brunt of this and other increases to his cost of living.

Not that the limousine liberals of the Bay Area will notice, however: they either can afford higher prices, or they have expense accounts that can afford them. Regardless, they can continue feeling good about themselves.

And that’s all that matters to them.

July 7, 2015

Good for the Kleins. Seriously. This bureaucrat’s decision was just appalling on so many levels.

Nice Deb

As you might have heard, the state of Oregon has decreed that Sweet Cakes by Melissa  must pay $135,000 to the lesbian couple whom they (apparently) “mentally raped” by refusing to bake their wedding cake.

Via Rachel Lu at the Federalist:

The final judgment, which came last Thursday, came with another twist. Aaron and Melissa Klein have also been given a “cease and desist” order, which effectively decrees they must refrain from stating their continued intention to abide by their moral beliefs.

Let’s be clear on why this is so sinister. There are times when speech rights conflict with other legitimate social goods. The public’s right to know can conflict with individual privacy rights. Sometimes threats to public safety warrant keeping secrets. There can be interesting debates about intellectual property rights. These cases can get tricky, and we should all understand that speech rights necessarily do have certain pragmatic limits.

Defector: North Korea testing chemical and biological weapons on… their own people.

July 6, 2015
Hope and Change?

The smiling face of evil.

I could sit here all day –a week, even– dreaming up horrible, lingering deaths for the North Korean ruling class.

And it still would be less than what they deserve:

A NORTH Korean scientist who defected to Finland has promised to expose the regime’s shocking practice of testing chemical weapons in its own citizens.

The biochemical weapons scientist, 47, managed to flee a North Korean research centre on the Chinese border on June 6 via the Philippines, a source from a North Korean human rights group told Yonhap news agency.

He reportedly took with him a storage device loaded with 15 gigabytes of information on the use of humans to test biological and chemical weapons in the North Korean laboratory he worked in. The data would shed light on the regime’s “inhumane tests”, the source told Yonhap.

“His ostensible reason for defection is that he felt sceptical about his research,” the source said.

The defector, known only by his surname Lee, is now expected to give testimony before the European Union parliament later this month.

“Sceptical” is an odd word, don’t you think? “Horrified,” “nauseated,” “outraged,” maybe. But “sceptical” implies thinking “Hmmm… I may be wrong, but, perhaps this isn’t a good idea.”

Then again, in North Korea, even skepticism (US spelling) is treason and can get you shot, so let us not doubt “Mr. Lee’s” bravery for being even “sceptical.”

Meanwhile, here’s just one example of what these human demons do:

Kwon Hyuk, a former head of security at North Korea’s infamous Camp 22, has described gas chambers where chemical experiments were conducted on prisoners.

Appearing on the BBC2 program This World in 2004, Hyuk said healthy prisoners were held inside glass chambers that were filled with gas while technicians observed their agonising deaths.

“I witnessed a whole family being tested on suffocating gas and dying in the gas chamber,” he said in the documentary.

“The parents, son and a daughter. The parents were vomiting and dying, but (until) the very last moment they tried to save kids by doing mouth-to-mouth breathing.

“At the time I felt that they thoroughly deserved such a death. Because all of us were led to believe that all the bad things that were happening to North Korea were their fault, that we were poor, divided and not making progress as a country.”

As I’ve said before, defector reports can be unreliable; there is a risk they will say what they think their benefactors want to hear in order to get good treatment. But, there are so many reports and they are all so similar that it is hard to discount them. “Mr. Lee” is the first I’ve heard of who claims to have brought with him hard data, not just stories. His testimony should be very interesting.

Let’s hope it hastens the end of the world’s largest prison camp masquerading as a nation, and that it leads to a condign punishment for its jailers.

Especially the pudgy guy at the top.
