The core of the Paris #ClimateConference is anti-capitalism

Hey, don’t take my word for it. That’s the assertion of a high UN official overseeing our fight to save the Earth from… something.

At a news conference last week in Brussels, Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.

“This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” she said.

Referring to a new international treaty environmentalists hope will be adopted at the Paris climate change conference later this year, she added: “This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model for the first time in human history.”

As the article points out, that “economic development model” is capitalism, which is responsible for vastly improving the lives of billions in the last century-and-a-half.

Why? Well, the answer isn’t “climate change” or “global warming.” That’s just the excuse. Forty years ago, it was the fear of a new ice age, or the myth of overpopulation. Now it’s a super-heating world… that hasn’t warmed for over 18 years.

The real reason is the pursuit of the massive redistribution of wealth from developed countries to the “underdeveloped,” and control of that redistribution through the agency of transnational, democratically unaccountable bureaucracies. Ones from which the leaders, such as Sra. Figueres, will profit handsomely even as our economic prospects are hamstrung.

“Profit?” Oh, yes. This is the Solyndra subsidy and crony investment scheme on a global scale. In Ms. Figueres’s case, her Wikipedia entry provides a clue:

Christiana Figueres has not only been active in the public arena and in the field of NGOs, she also collaborates actively with private sector companies that align themselves with climate friendly goals. Ms. Figueres served as Senior Adviser to C-Quest Capital, a carbon finance company focusing on programmatic CDM investments.[40] She was the Principal Climate Change Advisor to ENDESA Latinoamérica, the largest private utility in Latin America with operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru. She was also Vice Chair of the Rating Committee of the Carbon Rating Agency, the first entity to apply credit rating expertise to carbon assets.

Do the words “consulting fees,” “board memberships,” and “stock options” ring a bell? I’m sure you can spot the conflicts of interest and self-dealing.

That’s what the Paris conference is really about.

Report: Global growth in CO2 emissions stagnates

November 27, 2015

We may have to put off the end of the world for a bit. Al Gore, climate cultists hardest hit.

Watts Up With That?

From the “just in time for Paris” and “impending doom canceled” department comes this report from the EUROPEAN COMMISSION JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE:

After a decade of rapid growth in global CO2 emissions, which increased at an average annual rate of 4%, much smaller increases were registered in 2012 (0.8%), 2013 (1.5%) and 2014 (0.5%). In 2014, when the emissions growth was almost at a standstill, the world’s economy continued to grow by 3%. The trend over the last three years thus sends an encouraging signal on the decoupling of CO2 emissions from global economic growth. However, it is still too early to confirm a positive global trend. For instance India, with its emerging economy and large population, increased its emissions by 7.8% and became the fourth largest emitter globally.

Claim: Global warming has been good for Champagne

November 11, 2015

Like I’ve said before: CO2 is plant food, and rising levels are good for agriculture. So, let’s pop the corks and celebrate global warming!

Watts Up With That?

Perrier-Jouët advertisement of 1923 Perrier-Jouët advertisement of 1923

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

WUWT recently reported that wine makers are not concerned about climate change. Now Champagne makers have gone a step further, claiming that global warming has been good for them.

According to Reuters;

As France prepares to host world leaders for talks on how to slow global warming next month, producers of the northeastern French region’s famous sparkling wine have seen only benefits from rising temperatures so far.

The 1.2 degrees centigrade increase in temperatures in the region over the past 30 years has reduced frost damage. It has also added one degree in the level of alcohol and reduced acidity, making it easier to comply with strict production rules, according to champagne makers group CIVC.

“The Champagne region and Germany are among the northerly vineyards which have managed to develop thanks to warmer weather,” Jean-Marc Touzard, coordinator of a program…

OOPS! Solar power causes climate change. Green cultists, rent-seekers hardest hit

November 4, 2015
Climate changer

Climate changer

Hat tip to Pirate’s Cove, this little item in The Washington Post should have the climate alarmists, well, alarmed:

Large solar arrays could have some surprising side effects, according to a new study, including causing changes in the local climate.

On a global scale, these changes will be minor compared to what would happen if humans continue to burn fossil fuel for energy instead, but are still worth watching, scientists say.

Figuring out how renewable energy sources will affect their local landscapes is an increasingly relevant challenge for scientists, as more and more nations are vowing to slash their carbon outputs and switch to alternatives, such as solar and wind energy. Previous studies have shown that both solar arrays and wind farms have the potential to cause regional changes in temperature and precipitation by altering the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth or disrupting local airflow patterns.

With this in mind, Aixue Hu, a climate change research scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, conducted a study, published Monday in Nature Climate Change, that attempted to predict the climatic effects of solar arrays.

Part of the magical thinking of the Climastrologists is that their alternative energy sources are so clean and pure that it’s worth any inefficiencies and higher consumer costs to save the Earth. Rent-seeking captains of Green industries claim the subsidies they receive (read: taxpayer money) are for a good cause.

Which, of course, is so much horse manure. At a minimum, solar plants and wind farms need back up power plants spinning on standby 24-by-7, ready to take up the slack for those times when the sun doesn’t shine or the wind doesn’t blow (or blows too hard). They have to be ready at a moment’s notice, which means they have to be reliable, which in turn means they run on… fossil fuels. Fuels that spew evil, demonic, Gaea-hating CO2 into the atmosphere.

And that’s just from the back-up plants. As the article suggests, the heat generated by solar plants and the changes to wind patterns (as wind farms take energy from the wind to convert to electricity) have to have some local and regional effects.

But, don’t worry. Per the article, this is nothing compared to GLOBAL DESTRUCTION!!! that’s coming from anthropogenic global warming.

On a planet that hasn’t warmed for 18 years.

But don’t ever let the facts get in the way of a good racket.

Back To The Dark Ages: Top French Weatherman Fired Over Climate Change Book

November 3, 2015

Apparently in France, “liberty, equality, fraternity” does not include the liberty to question dominant opinions. Equality does include equal rights of conscience and intellect. And fraternity ends when you question established dogma. Belief in man-caused global warming isn’t science: it’s a cult that demand unquestioning obedience, or you will be punished.

Watts Up With That?

From: France 24, 1 November 2015 (h/t to The GWPF)
A popular weatherman announced Saturday evening he has been sacked by leading French news channel France Télévisions for publishing a book which accused top climate change experts of misleading the world about the threat of global warming.

Philippe Verdier, a household name in France for his daily weather reports on the France 2 channel, announced in an online video that he had received a letter of dismissal.

“My book ‘Climate Investigation’ was published one month ago. It got me banned from the air waves,” said the weatherman, who was put “on leave” from the TV station on October 12.

“I received this letter this morning and decided to open it in front of you because it concerns everybody- in the name of freedom of expression and freedom of information.”

His announcement comes four days after France Télévisions chief Delphine…

Ooops! New NASA study: Antarctica isn’t losing ice mass after all !

October 31, 2015

But wait. I thought the science was settled. Al Gore said so…

Watts Up With That?

From the “settled science” department and former chief alarmist Jay Zwally, who for years had said the Arctic was in big trouble (only to have his prediction falsified), comes this Emily Litella moment in climate science: “Never mind!”. Curiously, WUWT reported back in 2012 about an ICEsat study by Zwally that said: ICESAT Data Shows Mass Gains of the Antarctic Ice Sheet Exceed Losses. I surmise that with the publication of this second study, the original is now confirmed. I suppose John Cook will have to revise his “Denial 101” video on Antarctica now.

Wine Makers NOT concerned about Climate Change

October 31, 2015

Of course they’re not worried: increasing CO2 means more plant food. Besides, in prior warming periods, there were wine grapes grown in Roman and Early Medieval Britain. If the alarmists are right, we might soon be sipping fine Scottish merlots. (McTavish Winery, anyone?)

Tempranillo (also known as Ull de Llebre, Cencibel, Tinto del Pais and several other synonyms) is a black grape variety widely grown to make full-bodied red wines in its native Spain.[1] Its name is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano ("early"),[1] a reference to the fact that it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine has stated it is not concerned about the impact of climate change, at least in the short to medium term.

According to Reuters;

Good news for wine drinkers: a leading international body says grape vines are a hardy little number and can survive climate change, at least over the medium term.

According to Belinda Medlyn, a theoretical biologist with Western Sydney University, trees exposed to enhanced CO2, in the gigantic open air Hawkesbury River climate study, grow 35% faster than their neighbours in the control group.

“Either they’re getting more carbon for the same amount of water, or they’re getting the same amount of carbon but using less water.”

Since 2012, the researchers have pumped extra CO2into three of six basketball court-sized rings of 80-year-old bush. This has raised the CO2 concentration in the three plots to about 550 parts per million, up from the ambient level of 400 ppm.

Measurements revealed that for each unit of water absorbed, the trees in the CO2-enriched rings reaped 35 per cent more carbon than the trees in the control plots.

It didn’t take long before it was clear that there isn’t likely going to be any catastrophic warming this century. What was clear is that skeptics are losing this battle, and I want to tell you why.

For thirty years, James Hansen and Al Gore have been building their PR machine along with David Fenton, the wizard of nonprofit PR. According to The Telegraph;

Every night, France’s chief weatherman has told the nation how much wind, sun or rain they can expect the following day.

Now Philippe Verdier, a household name for his nightly forecasts on France 2, has been taken off air after a more controversial announcement – criticising the world’s top climate change experts.
Mr Verdier claims in the book Climat Investigation (Climate Investigation) that leading climatologists and political leaders have “taken the world hostage” with misleading data.

The Bank of England has stepped into the climate fray, with a claim that climate change poses a huge financial risk to UK based businesses. For once I believe the Bank of England is absolutely correct (more below).

According to the Sydney Morning Herald;

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said Britain’s insurers face potentially “huge” exposure to shifts in climate-change policy and Group of 20 nations need to do more to combat associated financial-stability risks.

“The challenges currently posed by climate change pale in significance compared with what might come,” Mr Carney said in a speech at a Lloyd’s of London dinner.

Summary of GHCN Adjustment-Model Effects on Temperature Data

Guest essay by John Goetz

As the debate over whether or not this year will be the hottest year ever burns on, it is worth revisiting a large part of the data used to make this determination: GHCN v3.

The charts in this post use the dataset downloaded at approximately 2:00 PM on 9/23/2015 from the GHCN FTP Site.

The monthly GHCN V3 temperature record that is used by GISS undergoes an adjustment process after quality-control checks are done. The adjustments that are done are described at a high-level here.

The adjustments are somewhat controversial, because they take presumably raw and accurate data, run it through one or more mathematical models, and produce an estimate of what the temperature might have been given a set of conditions. For example, the time of observation adjustment (TOB) takes a raw data point…

The ‘Cult’ of Climate Change (née Global Warming)

There’s a reason I refer global warming alarmists as “cultists” and their movement as the “Church of Anthropogenic Global Warming.” Click through for more.

Watts Up With That?

Guest essay by Ari.H.

Global warming has become a religioJosh-97-percent-littlesn. This is the opinion of Nobel Prize Winning Physicist Dr. Ivar Giaever , Prof. Richard Lindzen, and many others. Climate change alarmism has a surprising number of attributes of a medieval or even ancient religion. Nevertheless, real religions have some pre-requisites, like a tradition spanning at least few generations. So the proper name for climate alarmism is a cult. And these are the telltale attributes:

1) Climate alarmists pretend to possess indisputable truths about the past, present, and future. From minute details of the paleoclimate to the world state 200 years in the future, alarmists know everything.

2) The alarmist movement stubbornly refuses to debate its dogma, calling it “settled science” and viciously attacking its critics. The attacks are not limited to name calling but include prohibiting scientific research that contradicts this dogma. Significant figures within the movement…

Mystery lights in space increasing, moving south, potential sign of global warming

Strange blue lights glowing on the edge of space first appeared over polar regions in 1885 and today, sightings are becoming increasingly common, and now the phenomenon is moving into lower latitudes including Northern California.

Study: German Scientists Conclude 20th Century Warming “Nothing Unusual” …Foresee “Global Cooling Until 2080″!

We’ll probably be treated to the sight (again) of climate cultists protesting anthropogenic global warming… in a snowstorm.

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Another study shows that 20thC temperature rise is nothing unusual historically.

The Die kalte Sonne site here features a worrisome essay by German climate scientists Horst-Joachim Lüdecke, Dr. Alexander Hempelmann and Carl Otto Weiss. They carefully examined climate changes of the past and have found that the recent changes (of the last 40 years are nothing out of the ordinary and that we need to worry about a global cooling that will persist until 2080.

I will let readers make their own judgements. But I will pose a simple question, which warmists always shy away from:

What brought about the MWP and subsequently the LIA, not to mention previous cold and warm episodes.
Their usual answer is to deny they ever existed, but the evidence overwhelmingly shows that they did.

Only when we understand these events can we begin to understand recent warming.

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

The Australian CSIRO has claimed that global warming increases both the incidence of frost, and the amount of damage frost causes to crops.

According to the CSIRO;

University of Queensland research scientist, Dr Jack Christopher, said climate modelling of 60 years’ worth of data has shown that while average temperatures have been increasing, the incidence and impact of frost has also increased during that period.

“One of the main factors causing that is the fact that the plants are actually growing a lot quicker in the warmer weather, so that when they’re planted at what we think is the correct time, they’re actually flowering too soon and are flowering during a much higher frost risk period than was intended,” he said.

Frost damage costs Australian agriculture millions of dollars each year due to reduced yield.

EPA to spend tax dollars to study *indoor* climate change

August 16, 2015
Victim of climate change

Victim of climate change

Oh, why not? Catastrophic man-caused climate change is a chimera, anyway, so why not act like Don Quixote and see it everywhere?

The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday awarded $8 million in grants to nine universities to help better understand the impact of climate change on indoor air quality.

The agency said climate change’s impact on indoor air pollutants like mold, mildew and asthma triggers isn’t well understood.

And those effects –you can be sure they’ll find plenty using hedge-words such as “possible” and “maybe”– will be used to justify further economy-crippling regulations from EPA (and HHS?), all in the name of “public health.” Come on, you’re not against good quality air in America’s schools, are you? Or are you a denier?

“Learning how air quality, climate, and energy interact in an indoor environment will help us design buildings that better protect people’s health,” explained Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England office

The money is nothing to sneeze at for the winning universities.

And, like I hinted at earlier, that money will guarantee that impecunious grad students and non-tenured faculty will find the right results to keep those contracts secure.

The Pause draws blood – A new record Pause length: no warming for 18 years 7 months

For 223 months, since January 1997, there has been no global warming at all (Fig. 1). This month’s RSS temperature shows the Pause setting a new record at 18 years 7 months.

It is becoming ever more likely that the temperature increase that usually accompanies an El Niño will begin to shorten the Pause somewhat, just in time for the Paris climate summit, though a subsequent La Niña would be likely to bring about a resumption and perhaps even a lengthening of the Pause.

(Video) The truth about CO2, and the corruption of Greenpeace

July 27, 2015

Two videos today from Prager University, both narrated by Dr. Patrick Moore, a PhD in Ecology from the University of British Columbia and one of the founders of the environmental activist group Greenpeace.

In the first, Dr. Moore discusses the nonsense surrounding the almost superstitious dread of carbon dioxide among climate alarmists. Notably, and as has been mentioned several times on this blog and elsewhere, Dr. Moore points out the inconvenient truth that the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has in the past been up to ten times higher than it is now, without the world ending. That, in fact, we are still in an era of relatively low CO2 concentrations. Also, he mentions a truth so obvious that only climate hysterics need to be told it: CO2 is plant food. In fact, the ideal atmospheric concentration of CO2 is 4-5 higher than it is now. We can already see the benefits of increasing CO2 as the Earth grows greener, contrary to the Cult of Climate Change’s dire predictions.

But enough of me ranting. Here’s Dr. Moore, not ranting:

The second video is Dr. Moore’s tale of how he came to be a founder of Greenpeace, in its day an organization dedicated to a mix of scientific conservationism and anti-war politics. He relates how the movement changed over time to an anti-scientific, almost anti-human dogma, which at its farcical worst declared banning the element chlorine as a goal, going so far as to label it “the Devil’s element.”

Nothing religious or cultish about that.

Here’s Dr. Moore explaining why he finally had to leave Greenpeace:

That’s the trouble with organizations that get captured by their most ardent activists: they drive out the moderates who could act as a brake on their worst tendencies, which, left unchecked, wreck their credibility.
