Hottest six months on record? Chicken Little strikes again.

July 18, 2010

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, has put out a press release claiming that the first six months of 2010 are the hottest on record. Oh, no!! Al Gore, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, and Sheryl Crow were right! We have to pass economy-crippling legislation now before a harmless atmospheric gas destroys us all!

Wait a second. This claim is based on readings from temperature stations around the globe. However, when spot-checked, problems arise: for example, the reading at the station does not agree with the map produced by NOAA. In other areas of the world, there are no or few temperature stations in the areas showing the most alarming readings, and many areas have such short temperature records that placing the existing readings in historical context is difficult; the NOAA press release creates a misleading impression of unusual warming:

The problem with the above map: data quality and data manipulation.

The following sections provide some spot checks on the areas of the world exhibiting the most warming according to NOAA. The gridded historical data graphs shown in these sections are from the Hadley CRUTEM3 database for January – June. (CRUTEM3 uses a 1961-1990 base period whereas the NOAA data above is for a 1971-2000 base period. This simply shifts the anomalies on the vertical scale, but does not affect the relative trends.)

It is clear from the following sections that NOAA performs manipulations to create false impressions from the data, including assigning temperature increases were there is zero data.

Do read the whole post, it’s illuminating. And before buying into yet another claim of “the hottest ever,” look into the problems with land-based temperature stations: it’s on these that the data sets the alarmists claim prove global warming rely. Here’s one example to get you started.
