9/11 ten years later: they’re still trying to kill us

September 10, 2011

With the tenth anniversary of the September 11th atrocities coming tomorrow, there’s reasonable fear that Al Qaeda could attempt an attack in New York or elsewhere in the US for their own “celebrations.”

But don’t think they or other jihadist groups have been quiet in the meantime, just waiting for an anniversary to strike us. Far from it, for they see it as their religious duty to attack us. As this chart from the Heritage Foundation shows, there have been at least 40 domestic terror plotsan average of four per year— foiled since September 11th, 2001:

Never forget, and always be on guard. They’re still trying to kill us.

Terror in Oslo? Blast rocks Norwegian capital. UPDATE: Shots fired at youth camp. UPDATE III: Claim of Responsibility? UPDATE IV: “Blond, Nordic shooter?”

July 22, 2011

An explosion ripped through offices near the Prime Minister’s office this morning:

A large explosion has hit near government headquarters in the Norwegian capital Oslo.

The blast is thought to have caused damage to the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and a number of other official buildings.

Initial reports suggested Mr Stoltenberg was unharmed.

At least eight people were injured in the city centre explosion, local media reports. No-one has said they were behind the attack.

Television footage from the scene showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets – smoke was around some buildings. The wreckage of at least one car was in street.

All roads into the city centre have been closed, said the NRK newspaper.

Details are still sketchy and I fear casualties are likely to rise. (Latest: Two at least are dead.) It may not even have been a bomb, but…

Is it just coincidental that this happened soon after Norway filed criminal charges against a prominent jihadist cleric who had threatened Norwegian officials?

A Norwegian prosecutor has filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he’s deported from the Nordic country.

The indictment, obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, centers on statements that Mullah Krekar — the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam — made to various media, including American network NBC.

Norway ordered Krekar deported in 2005 after declaring him a national security threat, but the decision was suspended amid worries he would face execution or torture in Iraq.

At a news conference in June 2010, Krekar said that if he’s deported to Iraq and is killed there, Norwegian officials would meet the same fate. He singled out former asylum policy minister Erna Solberg.

Prosecutor Marit Bakkevik said Krekar’s statements violated Norwegian terror laws and were meant to force authorities to halt the deportation order and to instill fear in Norwegian society.

In other words, they weren’t behaving like good little dhimmis, and so they had to be terrorized into submission.

Via Michelle Malkin, who is doing running updates and has useful background links on Norway’s Islam-problem.

LINKS: See also Bruce Bawer’s article on the Norwegian Islamic car-b-que and the danger in Norway’s future. More from my blog-buddy, ST. Is this an escalation from the Norwegian rape-jihad?

PS: No, I am not saying it had to be Muslims waging jihad fi sabil Allah, but, based on the pattern of the last ten years, it sure is a good working hypothesis.

UPDATE: Norwegian authorities have confirmed it was a bomb. Obviously, radical international Quaker terrorists have struck again.

UPDATE II: In addition to the bombing, there are reports that someone in a police uniform opened fire at a Norwegian youth camp:

Police say they are sending anti-terror police to a youth camp outside Oslo after reports of a shooting there following the bomb blast at the government headquarters.

The news site VG reported that a man dressed in a police uniform opened fire at the camp. It says several people were injured.

Oslo police chief Anstein Gjengdal said anti-terror units were being sent to the camp at Utoya, outside the Norwegian capital.

UPDATE III: Will McCants at Jihadica found a claim of responsibility online in Arabic. Below is a very rough translation from Google Translate:

Praise be to God Nasser slaves combined and humiliating the people of shirk and kufr companions, prayer and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, his family and companions and after
The Almighty said: (then fight for God but do not cost yourself and rouse the believers may be that Allah keeps those who disbelieve and Allah is more powerful and in punishment) [women: 84]
Here have reached the countries of Europe is another message from the militants and further proof of the countries of Europe that the Mujahideen will not stand idly towards their war against Islam and Muslims.
Today has been targeting Norway to be a lesson and a lesson to the rest of Europe has already threatened us since the invasion of Stockholm more operations has asked European countries to withdraw their armies from the land of Afghanistan and stop its war against Islam and Muslims, and we repeat our warning again to the countries of Europe and tell them carried out the demands of the mujahideen, what you see is only the beginning and the next more.
The reasons for the targeting of Norway there are many of the most important of their participation in the occupation of Afghanistan and the abuse of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Praise God that enabled slaves to the combined .. and pray to God to save our brothers and our fighters everywhere.
Glory and praise God I bear witness that no god but You Astgrk and I repent to you.

Abu Suleiman Al-Nasser
Ansar al-Jihad of the world

Mullah Krekar, mentioned above, is head of Ansar al-Islam. I’ve not heard of this latter group, but it’s possible it’s a fake or cover name.

via DaveedGR on Twitter

BRIEF UPDATE: The author of the above message has issued a retraction. Spoke without authorization?

FINAL UPDATE: The shooter at the youth camp is also suspected of planting the bomb in Oslo. From the description, he doesn’t sound like the typical jihadi:

Police said they were confident they had been able to identify the gunman, whom they had in custody. They did not release his identity, but they said they had confirmed that they had “reason to believe” he was connected to the Oslo bombing.

NRK reporter Astrid Randen quoted witnesses as saying the man — described as “tall, blond and Nordic-looking” and speaking Norwegian — wore a police uniform and summoned youth campers to gather around him before he “just executed them.”

It’s certainly possible this was a psycho acting out of motives other than jihad. On the other hand, jihadist groups have been actively recruiting “White, European converts” for years because of the ease with which they could move through society. We’ll see. My suspicion is that we’ll learn this guy is a convert who trained at a jihad camp.

Friends and allies: most major terror plots originate in Pakistan — Updated

July 7, 2011

Don’t forget, we’ve given Pakistan more than $18 billion in aid since September 11th, 2001. Gee, thanks for having our backs, guys:

Most of the major terrorist plots against the West since 2004 had links to Pakistan, including two that targeted Canada, says a study to be released today by a U.S. think tank.

In just over half of the 32 “serious” plots identified in the New America Foundation study, the participants had received either training or direction from jihadists in Pakistan.

The findings underscore Pakistan’s role as al-Qaeda’s primary safe haven, despite recent concerns about countries like Yemen, writes investigative journalist Paul Cruickshank, the study’s author.

“This paper has shown that by some measures al-Qaeda’s safe haven in Pakistan has actually become more dangerous in recent years. More serious plots emerged in the West in 2010 linked to established jihadist groups in Pakistan than in any year since al-Qaeda built up its operations in FATA in the early 2000s.”

FATA is the acronym for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the rugged frontier region of Pakistan, where al-Qaeda and its affiliates have set up since the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

In 53% of terror plots, members of the groups involved had trained in Pakistan, compared with 6% in Yemen, 3% in Iraq and 38% where no overseas training occurred, the study says.

Forty-four percent of the plots were directed by jihadist groups in Pakistan, while 6% were directed from Yemen, 3% from Iraq and 47% had no clear overseas direction.

Most of the Western recruits who went to Pakistan had initially wanted to fight NATO forces in Afghanistan but were instead persuaded to return to their home countries to conduct terrorist attacks, it says.

This isn’t to say the Pak government directed these attacks (though in some cases they have), but the central government is chronically weak, and large factions are very sympathetic to al Qaeda, the Taliban, and the jihadist cause overall. They’ve been at best a part-time ally, sometimes giving us important cooperation, sometimes working against us — often at the same time. We’ve tolerated it because we not only need the cooperation we do get (Several al Qaeda bigwigs were nabbed with Pakistani help.), but because our position in Afghanistan has required putting up with a lot to keep supply routes open through the Khyber pass.

But that situation is changing with Obama’s decision to run away withdraw from Afghanistan; we just won’t need that supply route nearly as much.

And if that’s the case, and if so much terrorism originates in Pakistan and the government is unable or unwilling to stop it, why should we keep giving them so much money? Or do we keep paying tribute for fear Pakistani nukes would otherwise wind up in the wrong hands?

My own feelings mirror those of Victor Davis Hanson: time to say “Adios, Pakistan!”

via Undhimmi

UPDATE: And just to add a bit of fuel to the fire, our “allies” were selling nuke secrets to the North Koreans:

The founder of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb program asserts that the government of North Korea bribed top military officials in Islamabad to obtain access to sensitive nuclear technology in the late 1990s.

Abdul Qadeer Khan has made available documents that he says support his claim that he personally transferred more than $3 million in payments by North Korea to senior officers in the Pakistani military, which he says subsequently approved his sharing of technical know-how and equipment with North Korean scientists.

Admittedly, this was in the 1990s, but still, not something you want to see in a responsible friend and partner.

To say the least. (via The Jawas)

Bombing plot foiled? – Updated. New: explosives found

October 29, 2010

(Scroll down for updates.)

They’re still trying to kill us:

Authorities were investigating “potentially suspicious items” on Friday on cargo planes that landed at airports in Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, the Transportation Security Administration said.

“Out of an abundance of caution the planes were moved to a remote location where they are being met by law enforcement officials and swept,” the TSA said in a statement.

They’re also checking a UPS truck in New York, on which they may have found a bomb.

This may be partly why the terrorist chatter has picked up over the last few weeks.

Updates as they become available.

LINKS: More at Hot Air.

UPDATE: More from CNN

Airports in some of the United States were on high alert Friday after investigators found a suspicious package on a plane in the United Kingdom the night before, a law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation said.

The suspicious package, which contained a “manipulated” toner cartridge, tested negative for explosive material, the source said, but it led to heightened inspection of arriving cargo flights in Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a UPS truck in New York.

Police also were investigating a suspicious package at the distribution center of an airport in East Midlands, in the United Kingdom, an airport spokesman said. Authorities said they could not immediately connect that investigation to the ones unfolding in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Authorities seemed most focused on inspecting cargo planes.

Investigators were examining two UPS planes that landed at Philadelphia International Airport and another at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, said Mike Mongeot, a UPS spokesman.

Authorities are focusing on flights coming from Yemen into the United States, according to the source.

Note: Anwar al-Awlaki, an American imam who has called for jihad attacks against the US, is hiding in Yemen.

UPDATE 2:  Explosives were found in Dubai on a plane headed for the US:

A suspicious device discovered in an air cargo shipment in Dubai that was headed for the U.S. contained explosive materials, an official UAE security source said Friday.

It was the first confirmation that any of the suspicious packages reported Friday contained explosives.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said late Friday the “explosive device” was found in the last 24 hours in a courier company’s regional hub and originated in a shipment from Yemen.

This looks like a carefully thought-out plan to use several “delivery paths,” some true and some false, in the hope that one or more gets through. Let’s hope we’ve found them all.

UPDATE 3: Synagogues may have been the target. Allahpundit wonders if al Qaeda has switched to mail bombs because getting a person into the US has become too difficult. I doubt it. More like they’re trying every avenue of attack, figuring one will work.

Fingers crossed: Islam, taqiyya, and the oath of citizenship

October 7, 2010

There was a good (in the sense of “informative while disturbing”) post at Power Line yesterday by John Hinderaker about the words spoken by convicted Times Square bomber Feisal Shahzad at his sentencing about Islam’s jihad against the West and his oath as an American citizen:

Much could be said of yesterday’s events, but I will note just two points. First, this exchange about Shahzad’s naturalization as an American citizen:

  • The judge cut him off at one point to ask if he had sworn allegiance to the U.S. when he became a citizen last year.
  • “I did swear, but I did not mean it,” Shahzad said.

I believe the Koran approves of such oath-taking with one’s fingers crossed.

(Emphasis added)

John’s right: the Qur’an does approve of such deception to protect oneself while in “infidel” lands. It’s called “taqiyya,” the religiously sanctioned deception of unbelievers. Raymond Ibrahim has written an article explaining taqiyya that should be must-reading:

Taqiyya offers two basic uses. The better known revolves around dissembling over one’s religious identity when in fear of persecution. Such has been the historical usage of taqiyya among Shi’i communities whenever and wherever their Sunni rivals have outnumbered and thus threatened them. Conversely, Sunni Muslims, far from suffering persecution have, whenever capability allowed, waged jihad against the realm of unbelief; and it is here that they have deployed taqiyya—not as dissimulation but as active deceit. In fact, deceit, which is doctrinally grounded in Islam, is often depicted as being equal—sometimes superior—to other universal military virtues, such as courage, fortitude, or self-sacrifice.

Yet if Muslims are exhorted to be truthful, how can deceit not only be prevalent but have divine sanction? What exactly is taqiyya? How is it justified by scholars and those who make use of it? How does it fit into a broader conception of Islam’s code of ethics, especially in relation to the non-Muslim? More to the point, what ramifications does the doctrine of taqiyya have for all interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims?

Ibrahim has written two other articles I commend to your attention: “Nidal Hasan and Fort Hood: A Study in Muslim Doctrine,” part one and part two. Not only does he discuss taqiyya, but also concepts we need to understand such as “loyalty and enmity” (who exactly Muslims can be friends with), and Da’wa (active proselytizing), one of only two reasons pious Muslims are allowed to live among infidels.  (The other is jihad.)

This is far from saying all Muslims are secret jihadists or want to implement sharia law (though the number of the latter is larger than apologists want to admit). But, with committed enemies who feel it is fine to lie and practice deceit in order to hide among the larger population that simply wants to lead a quiet life, we are engaging in a fight with one eye shut when we refuse to understand the doctrines by which they justify their actions.

And, until we (and, especially, those charged with protecting us) do acknowledge and understand these doctrines, we will keep on being surprised and puzzled again and again by declarations like Shazad’s.

They’re still trying to kill us

August 30, 2010

I’m not sure what to make of this story, other than TSA is a bunch of boobs:

Two men taken off a Chicago-to-Amsterdam United Airlines flight in the Netherlands have been charged by Dutch police with “preparation of a terrorist attack,” U.S. law enforcement officials tell ABC News.

U.S. officials said the two appeared to be travelling with what were termed “mock bombs” in their luggage. “This was almost certainly a dry run, a test,” said one senior law enforcement official.

A spokesman for the Dutch public prosecutor, Ernst Koelman, confirmed the two men were arrested this morning and said “the investigation is ongoing.” He said the arrests were made “at the request of American authorities.”

The two were allowed to board the flight at O’Hare airport last night despite security concerns surrounding one of them, the officials said.

The men were identified as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi, of Detroit, MI, and Hezem al Murisi, the officials said. A neighbor of al Soofi told ABC News he is from Yemen.

Airport security screeners in Birmingham, Alabama first stopped al Soofi and referred him to additional screening because of what officials said was his “bulky clothing.”

In addition, officials said, al Soofi was found to be carrying $7,000 in cash and a check of his luggage found a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, three cell phones taped together, several watches taped together, a box cutter and three large knives. Officials said there was no indication of explosives and he and his luggage were cleared for the flight from Birmingham to Chicago O’Hare.

So, what did they need to actually stop him? An autographed photo of Osama bin Laden and travel brochures for Waziristan?

This sure sounds like another terrorist dry run, which happens more often than most people think. And it’s a healthy reminder that there is still an enemy out there seeking to get to Paradise over our corpses. But, what were they doing sending the suspicious goods one direction, while taking themselves to Amsterdam? Was the whole point to see what they could get on board, and Amsterdam was their route back to whomever they report to?  If so, part one succeeded gloriously, and TSA again makes us ask “Why on Earth are we paying you guys?”

I’ve long argued that we make a mistake by concentrating on the tools and not the people, but this Keystone Cop episode make me wonder if profiling* would do any good, given the boneheads we apparently have “guarding” our security.

*(Oooh! I used the “p-word.” That must mean I’m a racist Islamophobic hater… or something. I shall have myself reported for sensitivity training, immediately.)

LINKS: More from Hot Air.

UPDATE 8/31/2010: Dry run unlikely? Perhaps, though the bundled items still make me very suspicious, and saying the pair was allowed to continue to Amsterdam for “investigative purposes” sounds like after-the-fact CYA.

Hizbullah on the border

July 6, 2010

Following up on this post about the deteriorating security situation on our southern border, word comes that Mexican police have foiled an attempt to set up a Hizbullah network in Tijuana, just a stone’s throw from Public Secrets Global HQ:

Mexico foiled an attempt by Hezbollah to establish a network in South America, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Hezbollah (sic) operatives employed Mexicans nationals with family ties to Lebanon to set up the network, designed to target Israel and the West, the Al-Seyassah daily said.

According to the report, Mexican police mounted a surveillance operation on the group’s leader, Jameel Nasr, who traveled frequently to Lebanon to receive information and instructions  from Hezbollah commanders there.

Police say Nasr also made frequent trips to other countries in Latin America, including a two-month stay in  Venezuela in the summer of 2008.

Nasr was living in Tijuana, Mexico at the time of his arrest, the report said.

The report follows warnings from the United States that Hezbollah and its backer Iran are stepping up operations in the region.

Given our government’s notable lack of concern for border security and their recent incompetence in the Detroit, Ft. Hood, and New York City incidents, and bearing in mind the well-known corruptibility of the state and local police* in Mexico, I’m sure you can imagine just how secure I feel at the moment. Hizbullah mounted the 1983 attack on the Marine barracks in Beirut on Iran’s orders, and I’ve no doubt they’re trying to establish sleeper networks in the US, “just in case.”

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: They’re still trying to kill us. Lots of us.

*(The article doesn’t specify, but I assume these were Mexican Federal police in the investigation.)

He was an industrious little jihadi…

May 18, 2010

Via Threat Matrix, we read about would-be Times Square car-bomber Faisal Shahzad’s follow up plans, should the bomb have gone off:

Times Square Bomb Suspect Had Multiple Targets, Source Says

Alleged Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad had multiple targets in the New York area, and was planning to wreak havoc in four other locations if his first, botched attack had been successful, a source told MyFoxNY.com

Shahzad, who authorities say left a car bomb in Times Square on May 1, had also hatched plots against other high-profile targets in and around New York City: Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, the World Financial Center — just across from Ground Zero — and the Connecticut-based defense contractor Sikorsky.

A source told MyFoxNY that Shahzad picked out the exact date and time to maximize the effect of the bomb by watching streaming videos online from Times Square. Shahzad determined that the landmark attraction is busiest on Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m., and planned an alternate date for Saturday, May 8.

At least he was thorough.

Yeesh…

But he was only an amateur terrorist

May 10, 2010

For those inclined to dismiss the Times Square jihadi as an “amateur” or with some other words meant to pooh-pooh him as nothing to really have worried about, consider the likely effect had the bomb gone off:

If you wanted to do a lot of damage with a well-rigged car bomb, the junction of West 45th Street and Broadway in midtown Manhattan, where Times Square narrows into an asphalt bottleneck, would be the place to pick. If the bomb planted in a green 1993 Nissan Pathfinder SUV on the evening of May 1 had exploded, here’s what would have happened, according to retired New York police department bomb-squad detective Kevin Barry. The car would have turned into a “boiling liquid explosive.” The propane tanks that the bomb comprised would have overheated and ignited into “huge blowtorches” that could have been ejected from the vehicle. The explosion, lasting only a few seconds, would have created a thermal ball wide enough to swallow up most of the intersection. A blast wave would have rocketed out in all directions at speeds of 12,000 to 14,000 ft. per sec. (3,700 to 4,300 m per sec.); hitting the surrounding buildings, the wave would have bounced off and kept going, as much as nine times faster than before. Anyone standing within 1,400 ft. (430 m) — about five city blocks — of the explosion would have been at risk of being hit by shrapnel and millions of shards of flying glass. The many who died would not die prettily. A TIME reporter familiar with the ravages of car bombs in Baghdad describes how victims appeared to be naked because a fireball melted their clothing onto the surface of their skin.

And, contra the President’s fool of a counterterrorism adviser, the only reason Times Square didn’t come to resemble downtown Baghdad circa 2006 was a combination of the bomber’s incompetence and the alertness of some street vendors and a homeless guy. The Department of Homeland Security and the rest of the security services had nothing to do with it, just as they had nothing to do with defeating the guy who tried to blow up NWA 253 over Detroit. We were lucky and incompetent; he was unlucky and incompetent.

But what happens when the luck turns?

Finally, the Obama Administration tells the truth

May 9, 2010

About the Times Square bomber, that is.

The investigation into the Times Square bomb plot has revealed that the Pakistani Taliban were behind the failed attack, top Obama administration officials said Sunday.

Despite conflicting claims over the past week from military and law enforcement officials, as well as Taliban leaders, Attorney General Eric Holder and White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said that authorities now believe suspect Faisal Shahzad acted at the direction of the Taliban in Pakistan and was probably funded by them.

Brennan told “Fox News Sunday” that Shahzad had “extensive interaction” with the group, which he described as virtually “indistinguishable” from Al Qaeda. He said investigators believe the suspect was trained by the militant network.

“It looks as though he was operating on behalf of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan,” he said. “This is a group that is closely aligned with Al Qaeda. It has a murderous agenda similar to Al Qaeda, they train together, they plan together, they plot together. They’re almost indistinguishable.”

I wouldn’t be so miffed if, in the immediate aftermath, they our political “leadership” had issued a straightforward statement that said “no comment while the investigation is under way,” instead of belching up stupid and inane statements to make people believe this was anything, anything but a jihadist plot. We’re not idiots. We can see the world around us, we remember what happened on a rotten day in September, 2001, and we know very well that they are trying to kill more of us.

We know this is a war.

You don’t have to come out of the gate screaming “Oh my God! It’s the Taliban!!”, but don’t treat us like simpleminded children who need a pat on the head, either.

(via Threat Matrix)

UPDATE: Good God. The President’s chief counterterrorism adviser has said, with regard to the Times Square attack, “We’re not lucky. We’re good.” We’ve had three major attacks in six months. One was a success for the other side (Ft. Hood), and the other two, Detroit and Times Square, failed only because of dumb luck and alert civilians. How stupid does John Brennan think we are? Here’s a clue, Johnny: it was luck, and you guys are worse than useless.

The jihad targets children, too

March 29, 2010

Remember the horror of the Beslan massacre, which started when Islamic “holy warriors” took over a Russian school and ended with over 300 death, 186 of them children?

They’ve tried again, this time in Azerbaijan:

Azerbaijan’s National Security Ministry said police had arrested eight members of an “organised criminal group, crossing illegally from Georgia into Azerbaijan with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts.”

A ministry statement said seven were Azeris, including three women, and the eighth was from Russia’s southern Chechnya republic.

It said the group had earlier concealed weapons and ammunition in the roof of a kindergarten and a school in the capital Baku and planned to attack both. The suspected ringleader is still at large, it added.

And yet we’re to believe Islam is a religion of peace.

Terror in Russia

March 29, 2010

Two blasts rip through the Moscow subway system, one near the infamous Lubyanka prison:

Explosions tore through two subway stations at rush hour on Monday, killing at least 37 people and wounding others, authorities and news agencies said.

The first blast came just before 8 a.m. at Lubyanka station, the Emergencies Ministry said. The headquarters of the Federal Security Service, successor to the Soviet-era KGB, is just above the station.

“The blast hit the second carriage of a Metro train that stopped at Lubyanka” at 7:56 a.m., ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said. The victims were inside the carriage and on the platform, she said.

About 45 minutes later, a second explosion rocked the Park Kultury station, authorities said.

Police spokesman Viktor Biryukov told the Associated Press that at least 12 people were killed in the second blast, which occurred at 8:38 a.m.

Terrorism was suspected in both incidents.

No, really?

To be blunt, I’ve been no admirer of how the Russians have handled their own jihadist insurgency in Chechnya and the surrounding Caucasus region. In fact, the Russian Army and related security forces have acted like barbarians, little better than the enemy they’re fighting. Brutality, rape, and murder have been their tools, and one hopes in vain for the day when these savages are prosecuted.

But that does not excuse attacks on civilian Russian targets by the jihadists, and while the Russians often show the darkest side of Western civilization, the mujaheddin are utterly antithetical to it – and in a ruthless calculation of self-interest constitute a greater long-term threat.  Assuming jihadists carried out this threat, here’s wishing the Russians good hunting in bringing them to bay.

(Just try not to live down to your reputations while doing it, okay?)

Opening the gates to our enemies?

March 18, 2010

The US Coast Guard is not only our primary resources for seaborne search and rescue, they’re also a key to the defense of our ports from terrorist attack.

So why is the Obama Administration planning to gut the Coast Guard?

Liberals are forever going on about “first responders.” Well, the Coast Guard should certainly be considered first among the first responders. Yet, the Coast Guard has come on hard times. The Post recently reported that of 12 major cutters assigned to Haitian relief earlier this year, ten of them broke down. Three were forced to limp back into port.

The Obama administration plans to cut 1,100 active duty personnel from the Coast Guard, the smallest of our military services. Funds for port security—our first line of defense—will be cut by $100 million.

Even Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) calls the cuts in the Coast Guard’s budget “penny-wise and pound foolish.”

Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee. Because of the administration’s cuts to the Coast Guard budget, their cutters will not be able to keep pace with the Navy in important combined missions. The average age of a Navy warship is 14 years, while that of a Coast Guard vessel is 41 years. New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans will now be less secure, Rogers charged.

The incoming Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Robert Papp, has said he would have to consider cutting homeland security training and operations. This is tantamount to announcing to the terrorists “the coast is clear.”

The Administration is willing to sink trillions into a health care “reform” that a majority of the nation does not want, yet a crucial component of our defense against Islamic jihadists, who have already shown themselves quite willing to kill thousands, is left begging. The single most important duty of the federal government is short-changed, so our leaders can pursue Hope and Change. Even that old fool Robert Byrd sees the folly in this.

And the Obama administration could well get a lot of Americans killed because of it.

Forget the shoe-bomber and the pantybomber

January 31, 2010

The next attack by al Qaeda may come via the boob-bomber:

Terrorists ‘plan attack on Britain with bombs INSIDE their bodies’ to foil new airport scanners

Britain is facing a new Al Qaeda terror threat from suicide ‘body bombers’ with explosives surgically inserted inside them.

Until now, terrorists have attacked airlines, Underground trains and buses by secreting bombs in bags, shoes or underwear to avoid detection.

But an operation by MI5 has uncovered evidence that Al Qaeda is planning a new stage in its terror campaign by inserting ‘surgical bombs’ inside people for the first time.

Security services believe the move has been prompted by the recent introduction at airports of body scanners, which are designed to catch terrorists before they board flights.

It is understood MI5 became aware of the threat after observing increasingly vocal internet ‘chatter’ on Arab websites this year.

The warning comes in the wake of the failed attempt by London-educated Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up an airliner approaching Detroit on Christmas Day.

One security source said: ‘If the terrorists are talking about this, we need to be ready and do all we can to counter the threat.’

A leading source added that male bombers would have the explosive secreted near their appendix or in their buttocks, while females would have the material placed inside their breasts in the same way as figure-enhancing implants.

When you’re done laughing, bear in mind, as the article points out, it only takes a few ounces of PETN to blow a fatal whole in an airplane. And this is being planned to circumvent body scanners, which would find explosives hidden where the sun doesn’t shine.

This goes to show that a sole focus on the tactic or the device is wrong, because the enemy will always find a new (and bizarre) way to try to kill us. Until we target the jihadi himself, via profiling, we are exposing innocent people to grave risks.

NCTC director Michael Leiter remained on ski slopes after Christmas Day airline bombing attempt

The top official in charge of analyzing terror threats did not cut short his ski vacation after the underwear bomber nearly blew up an airliner on Christmas Day, the Daily News has learned.

Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center since 2007, decided not to return to his agency’s “bat cave” nerve center in McLean, Va., until several days after Christmas, two U.S. officials said.

“People have been grumbling that he didn’t let a little terrorism interrupt his vacation,” said one of the sources.

Oh, come on, now. Did you really expect him to give up his place in the ski-lift line just because a jihadi tried to blow up a plane full of people over a major American city? Besides, he was just following his boss’ example. Jeez, there are priorities, you know.

So, let’s see. We have a  President who takes three days to make a statement so bloodless and perfunctory that it was obvious he wanted to get back to his golf game. Then there’s his Homeland  Security Secretary, who beclowned herself on national TV the weekend after the attack by telling us the system worked – and then that it didn’t. And don’t forget the chief counterterrorism adviser to the President, who assured us there are no downsides to treating the Pantybomber as a criminal suspect; after all, we can offer him a plea-bargain.

Who knew that, in November, 2008, we stepped into a time machine and traveled back to September 10thDoh

Can we all agree that Janet Napolitano is an idiot?

December 27, 2009

Regarding the attempted Christmas Day bombing of NWA Flight 253 by a Nigerian jihadi, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up an Amsterdam-Detroit airline flight Christmas Day demonstrated that “the system worked.”

I suppose that’s true, if your “system” involves a brave Dutch passenger and an improperly constructed bomb. Worked like a charm, Madame Secretary. Indeed, the design shows a Wile E. Coyote level of genius!

Of course, this is the same Secretary Napolitano who issued the infamous right-wing extremists report that was such a  shoddy piece of work it wouldn’t have even passed a freshman remedial research course, so perhaps we should have expected such a boneheaded statement.

Oh, and I suppose the system was working today when another Nigerian went nuts and had to be pulled off the same flight? (UPDATE: He may have been legit … or it may have been another dry run.)

I feel so secure about flying. Don’t you? Nailbiting

RELATED: Michelle Malkin adds another item to the myth of the poor, oppressed jihadist. ABC News explores the Yemen connection. (It’s kind of hard to be working alone when al Qaeda builds the bomb for you…) In fact, he may have links to the imam who was the spiritual mentor to Major Hasan, the jihadi behind the Ft. Hood massacre. He was certainly on a list, but why not the no-fly list? By the way, the bomber’s father tried to warn us. Meanwhile, Scotland Yard is looking into a possible UK connection. Richard Fernandez looks at the plane’s schematics to determine just what Abdul Mudallad had in mind. Fausta calls it the Flying Dutchman Security System. Finally, via The Jawa Report we get a link to a video about binary explosives and how little is needed to cause a lot of damage.

Let’s all say it together, now:  They’re still trying to kill us.

Mumbai on the Thames?

December 20, 2009

The news that terrorists may be planning to replicate the Mumbai massacre in a Western city shouldn’t surprise us; one of the goals of the jihad is to bring Western civilization to its knees with divinely sanctioned terror (See number 220). What better way than to attack one of the West’s financial centers?

Police expect Mumbai-style terror attack on City of London

Scotland Yard has warned businesses in London to expect a Mumbai-style attack on the capital.

In a briefing in the City of London 12 days ago, a senior detective from SO15, the Metropolitan police counter-terrorism command, said: “Mumbai is coming to London.”

The detective said companies should anticipate a shooting and hostage-taking raid “involving a small number of gunmen with handguns and improvised explosive devices”.

The warning — the bluntest issued by police — has underlined an assessment that a terrorist cell may be preparing an attack on London early next year.

It was issued by the Met through its network of “security forums”, which provide business leaders, local government and the emergency services with counter-terrorism advice.

During a “commando-style” raid by 10 gunmen on hotels and cafes in Mumbai in November 2008, 174 people were killed and more than 300 injured over three days.

Officials now report an increase in “intelligence chatter” — communications captured by electronic eavesdropping agencies. One senior security adviser said the police warnings had intensified and become much more specific in the past fortnight.

“Before, there has been speculation. Now we are getting what appears to be a definite plot to carry out a firearms attack on London,” he said.

Earlier this year, police, military and intelligence services held an exercise in Kent to see whether they could defeat a commando raid in London by terrorists.

“The exercise brought out to those taking part that the capability doesn’t exist to deal with that situation should it arise,” said a military source.

That last has be quite a comforting to people who live and work in the City: “Well, yes, it may well happen, but, don’t worry! We have no idea what to do! Carry on!”

Of course, defending against just such an attack is difficult, especially when the jihadis have accepted the inevitability of their own deaths and thus thrown caution to the winds. A small band that strikes quickly at targets that had been scouted in advance will have plenty of time to take hostages and do damage before the police or military can react. And if, as in the case of the Jewish center in Mumbai, the attackers don’t plan to take hostages, you can expect many dead before there’s ever a chance of rescuing them.

While the “chatter” may be just that and nothing more, it’s a given that al Qaeda and allied Salafist groups want to strike at important Western targets. And not just London: Washington, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles all present their own tempting targets, to name but a few. And it will happen: the FBI and local police have foiled over a score of serious threats in the continental United States since 9/11, most recently in New York and Denver.

Let’s not forget, they’re still trying to kill us.

Jihad fi sabil Allah.

Big terror arrest in Boston

October 21, 2009

Those misunderstanders of Islam are still trying to kill us. Don’t they get that it’s a religion of peace?

Of course, they were only doing their religious duty. It would insensitive and anti-multicultural of me to condemn them for it.

Which is fine with me.   Frustrated

9-11 on the rails?

September 11, 2009

It could happen; al Qaeda loves to attack mass-transit systems. Remember the Madrid train bombings and the London Tube attacks? It is as certain as he sun rising in the East that al Qaeda or some like-minded band of psychopaths will try to attack America’s rail system in order to inflict massive casualties.

Which makes news of the Obama Administration’s gutting of Amtrak’s Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations to please an allied union so comforting to learn:

Biden, in turn, is tight with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the powerful union that represents the Amtrak Police Department. According to OSSSO sources, the APD brass have been aggrieved over the non-unionized counterterrorism unit’s existence from its inception. A West Coast OSSSO team member told me that union leaders blocked police credentialing efforts by his office for more than a year. An East Coast OSSSO team member told me that the FOP recently filed a grievance against one of its counterterrorism officers for assisting a train conductor who asked for help in ejecting a ticketless passenger.

Unlike the highly-specialized officers at OSSSO, APD officers possess minimal counterterrorism training. Past studies show alarmingly low pass rates among APD patrolmen who have attended undergone basic special operations classes, according to government sources. The Amtrak FOP continues to squabble over turf with the rival Teamsters Union; its leaders can’t even agree on minimal physical fitness standards for its members that have yet to be implemented. Nevertheless, OSSSO is now under the command and control of the APD — and federal stimulus funding specifically earmarked for the counterterrorism unit has now been absorbed by the police department.

Be sure to read the whole thing. Makes you want to hop on board, doesn’t it?  Doh Nailbiting

Germany in the crosshairs?

September 8, 2009

Al-Qaeda hasn’t launched a major terrorist strike in the West for several years*, but intelligence reports of chatter among medieval psychopaths jihadis indicate plans for a strike bigger than 9-11, that Germany is the target, and that it may happen soon:

Jihadists close to al-Qaeda explicitly warned in new communications that Germany will be the target of the next 9/11-scale terrorist attack. The timing of the strike, they say, will be within the next few weeks.

According to analysts with the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response (ITRR), a recently intercepted jihadist communication declares that “everyone knows” that the “next strike is very near, a strike that will surprise everyone in its effect, which will be much more shocking than that of 9/11/2001.” The writer of the chilling message notes that this is the Muslim month of Ramadan and that “we pray that it will indeed be in this month.”

After referring to a previous boast by Osama Bin-Laden, that the enemy is afraid and unable to prevent the next attack, the communication says:

“And the Germans, grandchildren of the Nazis, know more than everyone else that they will be the first ones to taste [the nightmare]. It is just a matter of time – that is, days or weeks – and God willing you’ll see things that you’ve never heard of before.”

Analysts cite two reasons to suspect the attack, if it occurs, will happen this month: first, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It’s supposed to be a month of no fighting (a ban often ignored in Islamic history), and a strike at the end would be symbolically significant, showing strength and renewed religious zeal on the jihadis’ part. Also, German national elections are scheduled for the end of the month. Al Qaeda has struck during elections before, to great effect: their terrorist attacks in Madrid in 2004 during the elections toppled the national government, leading to their withdrawal from Iraq and Spain’s virtual surrender to al Qaeda. The temptation to strike a similar blow against Germany to force their withdrawal from Afghanistan (and cost Merkel the chancellorship) must be great.

A third reason may be in play, too: a recent airstrike against a Taliban group that had hijacked some fuel tankers also killed some civilians, who were helping themselves to the fuel. The strike occurred in Kunduz, in northern Afghanistan, an area under German military control. Al Qaeda, obsessed with revenge and ever-conscious of PR opportunities, may see this as a good time to “hit back against the murderous Crusaders” to bolster their image with other Muslims.

German authorities are not ignorant of this threat, and they have a very good counterintelligence service. One hopes, if the threat is genuine, that Berlin rounds up these refugees from the 7th century before any more innocents are hurt.
